Combining the art of old world wine-making with new world innovation to create Merlots that can be considered among the world’s best, from one of the world’s most acclaimed Merlot producing regions: Washington State. Washington State is America’s second largest wine-producing region, with over 31,000 vine acres and 600 wineries, 90% of them east of the Cascade Mountain range in the Columbia Valley of Eastern Washington, a high-plains region in which the Snake, Yakima and Columbia rivers converge. The Columbia Valley encompasses eight American Viticultural Areas: Walla Walla Valley, Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, Rattlesnake Hills, Wahluke Slope, Puget Sound and the Columbia Gorge. In this semi-arid climate, vines are planted on south-facing slopes to enhance sun exposure in the summer and air drainage in winter. The Cascades block the harsh storms coming in from the Pacific Ocean and so, Eastern Washington receives only 6 to 8 inches of rainfall annually. This creates an ideal environment for wine grapes to thrive year after year. The Columbia Valley’s warm, sunny days and extended sunlight hours (17.5 during the summer growing season) help develop intense flavors while its cool nights ensure high levels of acidity in the Merlot grapes. another great year for Northstar! The 2007 scores better for me than the 2006. Smooth and soft on the palate with lush fruit and good balance. more proof that some Merlots can be every bit as good as a Cabernet! Cheers!

Ripe and evocative, weaving cardamom, red chili and dark chocolate overtones into the black currant fruit, lingering on the expressive finish against refined tannins. Best from 2012 through 2017. 400 cases made. -HS Fruit sources for this limited-production Walla Walla bottling of Northstar Merlot include Leonetti's Loess vineyard, and Windrow and Anna Marie in the Seven Hills. Thick, lush and richly evocative, it shows Napa-like density. Chocolatey black fruits and baking spices add to the rich midpalate, which qualifies for the often-abused word 'hedonistic.' - P.G. A project started by Jed Steel back in the mid-90's and now part of Chateau Ste. Michelle, Northstar has gone on to become a benchmark wine from the Columbia Valley. Winemaker David Merfeld works closely with growers to achieve specific fruit quality and yields. The blend for this 2007 is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The Wine Advocate scored it 92 points saying "The 2007 Merlot Columbia Valley was blended from 14 vineyards while the wine was made with 40-60% whole berries depending upon the site. It was aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak. It reveals a nose of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, lavender, cassis, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, this impeccably balanced wine is loaded with raspberry, plum, and black fruit flavors, has outstanding density, and a long, fruit-filled finish.
