Northstar Merlot Columbia Valley 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Tasting Notes Dusty malt, dried herbs and bright cherry flavors are balanced well into this smoothly-structured wine that concludes with a supple, lingering finish. Vineyards Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from some of Walla Walla's best vineyard sites are showcased here. Planted in 1995 Vanessa Vineyards is located on the Oregon side of the appellation and contributed both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to this vintage. Windrow Vineyard produces fruit with small berries as a result of little to no added water through irrigation. The resulting fruit provides concentrated black cherry flavors, structure and complexity to the blend. Winemaking Grapes were destemmed, crushed and inoculated with Premier Cuvée yeast to begin the five-day fermentation. The must was punched down daily during fermentation, and then it was racked into barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation. Racking occurred every three months for clarity during the 17-month aging process. The barrel regime included 65% French and 35% American oak, 65% new barrels. The final blend consists of fruit from 11 distinct vineyard blocks. Vintage Overview The 2003 growing season began with a normal bud break-to-bloom cycle in early April. Warm, dry and constant weather conditions during the summer months created uniform berry maturation. Hot temperatures during the waning days of summer created excellent ripening conditions Modest spells of cooling precipitation in September ensured physiological maturity and flavor development at harvest. Combining the art of old world wine-making with new world innovation to create Merlots that can be considered among the world’s best, from one of the world’s most acclaimed Merlot producing regions: Washington State. Washington State is America’s second largest wine-producing region, with over 31,000 vine acres and 600 wineries, 90% of them east of the Cascade Mountain range in the Columbia Valley of Eastern Washington, a high-plains region in which the Snake, Yakima and Columbia rivers converge. The Columbia Valley encompasses eight American Viticultural Areas: Walla Walla Valley, Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain, Rattlesnake Hills, Wahluke Slope, Puget Sound and the Columbia Gorge. In this semi-arid climate, vines are planted on south-facing slopes to enhance sun exposure in the summer and air drainage in winter. The Cascades block the harsh storms coming in from the Pacific Ocean and so, Eastern Washington receives only 6 to 8 inches of rainfall annually. This creates an ideal environment for wine grapes to thrive year after year. The Columbia Valley’s warm, sunny days and extended sunlight hours (17.5 during the summer growing season) help develop intense flavors while its cool nights ensure high levels of acidity in the Merlot grapes. Big and complex for a Merlot. Washingtion wines have a much different tatste than Napa. This is a nice wine with more thickness than a typical Merlot. Pricey. It's more of a treat than an every day drinking wine. enjoy!

Wine Advocate ReviewI loved Northstar's 2003 Merlot Walla Walla Valley. Containing 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, this is a medium to full-bodied effort with delightful black cherry, spice, and sage aromas. A sappy, concentrated, seamless wine, it is velvety-textured, intensely flavorful, and lush. Layered with black cherries, blackberries, spices, and raspberries, this is a broad, engaging offering to be drunk over the next 8-9 years.
