Nolia Catalunya 2009

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

The spotlight here is on low-yielding old vine Grenache, planted on rocks, at a mountainous 3000 ft. elevation, and fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel. Under these conditions, the wine offers up aromas of raspberry and blackberry, with intense, sweet flavors and concentrated, rich texture which critics have compared to Chandacirc;teauneuf-du-Pape.

Espelt grows grapes in several properties in the area, and the vines we’re looking at are just 60 years old. Anna’s family has been farming in the region for generations, but just opened the winery ten years ago. Hills and mountains carve up the plains and coastal territory in the region, meaning that depending upon where you are, you could be a in a different microclimate. Right now we’re further inland among low-rolling hills, and mountains loom on the horizon. The next stop on our tour is a jagged rock ledge about seven feet tall along the side of the road, which Anna shows us to illustrate the qualities of Empordà soil. The top layer is sandy, and below that, granite. Anna plucks a plant that resembles rosemary from the ground. “This tells us the land is acidic,” she explains and hands it to me. I break the leaves, rub them between my fingers, and wonder if this herbaceous smell will be present in the wines we’ll taste later. Read less

Lush and soft, but light in body and low in tannin, this 100% old vine Garnacha is an excellent alternative to your favorite Candocirc;tes du Rhandocirc;ne or California Pinot Noir. Bright cherry and red raspberry fruits with rich spice and subtle vanilla notes. Great with pasta dishes as well as light pork- or beef-based meals.

This wine offers a good balance between fruity notes and a toasty oak background from the barrel aging. The nuances of spices and leather contribute to its complexity. The mocha and coffee notes kick in on the back end as the dark cherry flavors become harmonious and satisfying. The finish is velvety and elegant. A nice match with manchego cheese (sheep) and izbores cheese (goat) and with rigatoni Bolognese, chicken cacciatore or a medium rare standing rib roast.
