Nobilo Icon Pinot Noir Marlborough 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

Icon is the flagship of Nobilo Wines, one of New Zealand’s pioneer estates, established by the Nobilo family in 1943. Nobilo Icon Pinot Noir is a wine of exceptional palate weight and length, with a superb balance of opulent fruit flavours, clean minerality, and mouthwatering acidity. Made with 100% Marlborough fruit from Nobilo’s three finest estate vineyards: Ballochdale Vineyard, Awatere Valley; Brooklands Vineyard, Southern Valleys; and Hay Block, Waihopai Valley. The grapes were harvested and destemmed without crushing. This allows for a portion of whole berries in the ferment that provide the wine with a fresh-berry fruit lift, creating a fruit-driven and more complex wine. The grapes were cold soaked for five days to promote extraction of colour and flavour without harsh tannins. A mixture of wild and cultured yeast strains were used to enhance complexity and mouthfeel. The wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation, and was 100% barrel matured, 20% in new French oak. After ten months aging in barrel, the wine was blended and filtered. Rich aromas of red berry fruit and smoky oak with spicy undertones. Flavours of savoury dark berry fruit with integrated, toasty dried herb notes and good oak balance. The fruit on the palate is framed with silky smooth tannins to provide a wine with lushness, structure, and a generous finish. Perfect with mustard and herb-crusted rack of lamb or char-grilled tuna.

Very floral on the nose with a saline mineral edge that recalls seashells. There’s a suggestion of wood, but no fruit at this point. Round on the entry with real snap and verve in the mouth and wonderfully transparent bitter raspberry and cherry fruit. The wood comes out on the backend adding mocha and coffee tones, which are a little strong at this point, but the fruit powers through on the finish which has a firm, fruity finale that retains that bitter tone on the palate. This needs a bit of time to come together but the balance here makes this already appealing. 91pts

The 2011 Nobilo Icon Pinot Noir is dark ruby red. Spicy notes come to the fore immediately. Lifted aromas of raspberry, cherry, and blackberry. Rich fruitcake and spicy toasty oak flavors with fine tannins. The palate is generous and balanced with excelle

Generous, with vanilla, plum and black cherry flavors that are rich and lush, joined by plenty of echoes of cedar, tobacco and spice notes in the background. The finish reveals plenty of floral, herb and mineral details. Drink now through 2019. -MW Wine Spectator. A Pinot Noir wine from Marlborough in New Zealand. 2010 Nobilo Pinot Noir Icon 750ml

Enticing summer fruit aromas lead to flavours of ripe blackberries, cherries and plums with a long lingering finish. Complex cigar box notes, integrated oak and velvety tannins complete an experience of rare pleasure.

Lively, with fine intensity and supple texture to smoky black cherry, spice and pomegranate flavors underscored by cedary oak. Tangy structure lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2010.

This wine shows a fair bit of oak influence; notes reminiscent of brown sugar and mocha mingle with savory, root-vegetable-like fruit. The tannins are supple, the wine reasonably balanced in terms of alcohol and acids. Drink now.

As all the Icon Pinot Noirs have over the years, this one shows a fair amount of oak: cinnamon, toast and vanilla all mark the nose. But this medium-bodied wine also shows layers of soft, supple fruit underneath. Give it another year to integrate, then drink it over the next 3-4.
