Ninety Plus 90 Cellars Barbera d'Alba Lot 27 Piedmont 2015

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Vineyards & Winemaking: Harvested from vineyards of calcareous clay soils near the town of Monforte d’Alba. The grapes undergo a soft crushing followed by a temperature controlled fermentation using selected yeasts. The wine is matured in French oak for one year prior to release. Taste: Complex and concentrated aromas of raspberry and black cherry with hints of toasted hazelnut, chocolate, and leather. The wine is full-bodied but with a freshness that balances the wine’s ample weight. The finish is long and filled with red fruit and toasted oak flavors. Notes: Barbera is one of our staff favorites and possibly one of the most underrated grape varietals. At home in Italy’s Piedmont, Barbera makes wines that are full bodied, but bright and well balanced. This one comes from the same producer as our Barolo. If Barolo is your Saturday night wine than this Barbera is your Friday night pizza wine... Just make sure that it’s good pizza.

Story: Barbera is Italy's third most planted red grape and probably its best kept secret. At home in Italy's Piedmont, Barbera was once known as the people's wine because of its versatility and drinkablity. Barbera is the quintessential food wine, capable of enhancing the enjoyment of nearly any meal. So grab a few bottles, call your friends, and gather together for some good company and delicious wine. Taste: Complex and concentrated aromas of raspberry, black cherry and stewed tomatoes with hints of toasted hazelnut and chocolate in the background. The wine's full texture is balanced by its vibrant acidity and mild tannin, making it a perfect fit to serve with spaghetti bolognese, roasted red meats and aged cheeses. Is your mouth watering yet?
