Niepoort Twisted Tinto Douro 2016

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Excellent red blend from Portugal. Very well balanced with dark red and black fruit, medium fine tannins, medium acidity and a nice finish. This is somewhat inky in color but fairly smooth on the tongue with blackberry, green plum and a touch of mint on the back end.

The idea behind TWISTED is the creation of a pleasant, easy drinking red wine, keeping complexity, mineral notes and great depth, like the classic Douro wines. The label also tells a story: creation and illustration are done by the american animator Bill Plympton. Tasting Notes: Very vivid ruby color, of medium concentration. Vibrant in the nose, scented with a fresh and very expressive aroma in the wild fruit notes. Spices and tea leaves harmoniously linked with a balsamic profile, originate a complex and captivating aroma. In the mouth, more elegant than the previous edition, has a markedly mineral profile. With a good mouth volume, young, with good acidity and soft tannins, is a feel like tasting wine, without being heavy thanks to its balance. Long finish, with a very refreshing mineral flavor. Grape Varieties: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and others

Vinification: The 2013 harvest began on August 19, earlier than usual, in order to maintain the high levels of acidity and avoid high alcoholic degrees. The year was more productive, about 25% when compared to the previous year. The decision to start harvest earlier turned out to be wise, since the main vineyards had already been harvested before it started raining intensely on September 27. The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness, with high acidity contents and balanced sugar levels; after selection, the stalk was total. The fermentation took place in stainless steel vats with 8-15 days of skin maceration. 15% of the wine was aged in French oak used barrels for 12 months. - Winery Grape Varieties: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and others Alcohol: 13% pH: 3.72 Total Acidity: 4.7(g/dm3)

Red appearance with a very alive purple/red rim. The aroma is dominated by finesse, some unripe fruit character integrated with balsamic notes. On the palate the wine is well structured, uncomplicated and refreshing and the low level of wood contact allows the fruit and minerality of the wine to express itself. The middle palate is quite firm with good depth, while the finish exhibits complexity, medium length and superb freshness and acidity on the finish. - WineryGrape Varieties: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz,Tinta Amarela, Tinto Cão and othersAgeing: 12 months in 225 L used French oak barrels (10%) and the rest in stainless steel.Dry Extract: 28.1Residual Sugar: 1.8 (g/dm3)Alcohol: 13.0%Total Acidity: 4.8 (g/dm3)

Vibrant and juicy, with notes of white pepper to the currant, red berry and cranberry flavors. The crisp finish has accents of iron and stone, and this shows fine balance and focus. Drink now through 2016. 587 cases imported. -KM The 2010 TWISTED red is a Douro blend, not all specified (as often happens in Douro field blends), including Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela and Tinta Cao, aged mostly in tank (25% was aged in old oak for 14 months). This is quite a nice Twisted in the modestly concentrated 2010 vintage. In the best years, Twisted is always on the lighter side, never particularly concentrated, of course. I wondered what would happen here in 2010--it holds up beautifully, is the short answer. This year's version has a bit of tannic punch on the finish in the wine's early days, plus a charmingly juicy, pure and stone-washed finish. If it is not very showy, it is vibrant and classy, harmonious and well balanced. It its own way,...
