"An irridescent royal purple to the eye, an assertive nose of spice and balsam, even an earthy, organic note--all a prelude of what to expect! On the palate, rich red cherries swirl with darker notes--Asian spice, dark chocolate perhaps? With time, the fruit and spice is infused with mint, dry tobacco, and violets. Wow! I found it hard to believe that only now, at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st that Portugal is emerging as a purveyor of fine, dry reds! At times I thought this a Pinot Noir, at other times a Bordeaux or even a Chianti--yet, of course, I am being unfair. If this is the taste of the Douro then please, take your place among the great reds of the world!"
