Niepoort Douro Batuta 2012

Member Review by tommyvino:

This is a wine that is not produced every vintage; first made in 1999 with only 6 vintages to date! Batuta's (stands for baton an orchestral conductor uses) goal as stated from winemaker Dirk Niepoort himself was nothing short of perfection. This is another field blend from mostly 100 year old vineyards made up of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and a few others grown in Schist soil. After being hand picked the grapes go through a rigorous selection process and ferment with natural yeast in stainless steel conic vats with skin contact from 30 to 60 days. The wine then transfers to 228L French oak cask where they undergo malolactic fermentation and age for 20 months. The beautifully complex nose carries dried herbs, dried cranberry, and cherries. The palate has an unmistakable textbook Douro minerality with slight bitter sweet chocolate on the finish. Dry, medium bodied, with tart acidity, soft velvety tannins, and a long enjoyable finish. Many layers to uncover with this baby! 695 cases crafted. The only thing I could harp on is the price $100 US, definitely feeling the strength of the Euro compared to the old reelin Buck! 4.5/5
