Nielson By Byron Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 2013

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Byron has been producing stellar Pinot Noirs since the late 80’s from their Nielson Vineyard located in the eastern foothills of the Santa Maria Valley. Planted in 1964 this vineyard lies just south of the famous Bien Nacido Vineyard and has mature vines with carefully selected clones of Pinot Noir. The climate here is ideal for Pinot as the cooling ocean breezes flow up through the valley and temper the very warm natural conditions. This 2013 is a standout for the excellent climatic conditions the vintage brought. Aged 16 months in French oak. The Wine Advocate scored this 92+ saying "Another terrific wine is the 2013 Pinot Noir Nielson Vineyard, which was completely destemmed and aged 16 months in 40% new French oak. Still showing its oak elevage, with lots of caramelized cherry, black raspberry, sweet oak and spice, it hits the palate with a seamless, silky, gorgeously pure texture that carries plenty of fruit and finishes clean and dry, with notable tannic grip. Give it a year or two in the cellar to integrate its oak and drink bottles through 2021."

Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brown’s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California. Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. Read less
