Niellon Michel Chassagne Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie Premier Cru(2001)

($60) Apple, fresh herbs, smoke and mint on the nose, plus a whiff of resiny oak. Sweet, soft, appley fruit could use a bit more spine. Round in the middle but a bit dry-edged on the end. A wine of modest concentration.

Decidedly bigger and richer than the Champs Gain and this is much more in the style of the Chassagne villages with its very ripe though fresh fruit aromas and big, robust, muscular flavors underscored by excellent length and powerful finishing acidity. This doesn't offer the finesse and elegance of the Champs Gain but the flavor authority, underlying material and exuberant personality are impressive.
