Niebaum-Coppola Estate Sofia Blanc de Blanc 2005
The 2005 Sofia Blanc de Blancs is far better than the few reviews I've read on the Net -- these other critics must not be frequent or avid white-wine consumers, is my biased guess. A good white wine is exceptional if it can be drunk alone or paired with food, and either way, stands out by gouging subtle 'taste markers' on your palate as it eases its way across the tongue and down the gorge. Sip this on the patio at sunset, have it with chorizo the next morning, or take it to your favorite spicy Asian bistro and let it soothe and band-aid the hot chili sauces that otherwise will cut micro-grooves in your tongue and burn your lips. The 05' Sofia is not a 02' Nicolas Joly, not a 07' Didier Dagneaux, not a 03' Cours Cheverny -- make no mistake about that. But in its own right as a simple American effort, it is both noteworthy and eminently drinkable. Salut!
