Nickel & Nickel Chardonnay Russian River Valley Searby Vineyard 2004
Vineyard Description: Searby Vineyard was planted in 1972 on the Goldridge sandy loam soils of the Russian River Valley. The vineyard is situated on a west-facing, gently sloping hill that is dry farmed and is very cool due to the marine influence. The clusters tend to have a combination of small and large berries, while the heirloom clonal selection produces Muscat-like flavors. Nickel & Nickel produces Chardonnay from just over nine acres of the vineyard. The 2005 growing season for this vineyard was very similar to 2003. After the February rains, moderate temperatures prevailed in March and April allowing for a normal budbreak, and excellent conditions in May led to a nice set. A pleasant summer followed with very few heat spikes and the flavors developed slowly. Patience and a little luck from Mother Nature allowed us to hang this fruit long enough to develop nice floral notes and sweet flavors before harvesting in late October. Harvest Notes: The floral aromatics that distinguish this wine are ever present in the 2005 vintage. Along with the Muscat and passion fruit flavors, there are hints of citrus on the palate, including tangerine and lemon zest. The wine's naturally crisp acidity is quite refreshing with the opulent fruit and the palate is enhanced by rich, French oak, which melds with the fruit flavors to achieve a long, lingering finish.
Established in 1997 by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. It is from some of the most coveted vineyards in the Napa and Sonoma valleys that the Nickel & Nickel wines are produced.
