User Reviews for Nickel & Nickel Chardonnay Russian River Valley Medina Vineyard
Add your reviewWinemaker's Notes:
APPELLATION: Russian River Valley, Sonoma VARIETAL: 100% Chardonnay FERMENTATION: Whole cluster pressed; barrel fermented (no ml) AGING: French oak barrels (52% new, 48% once-used) CASES PRODUCED: 3611 cases The 2005 growing season for this vineyard was very similar to 2003. After the February rains, moderate temperatures prevailed in March and April allowing for a normal budbreak, and excellent conditions in May led to a nice set. The vineyard was in good health and the crew went through and opened up the canopy to allow for good light penetration to the fruit. This was the first year that we anticipated receiving fruit from the entire vineyard, so we were pleased to see the year going so well. A pleasant summer followed with very few heat spikes and the flavors developed slowly. Patience and a little luck from Mother Nature allowed us to hang this fruit long enough to develop nice floral notes and sweet flavors before harvesting in late October. The floral aromatics that distinguish this wine are ever present in the 2005 vintage. Along with the Muscat and passion fruit flavors, there are hints of citrus on the palate, including tangerine and lemon zest. The wine’s naturally crisp acidity is quite refreshing with the opulent fruit and the palate is enhanced by rich, French oak, which melds with the fruit flavors to achieve a long, lingering finish.
