Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Stelling 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

APPELLATION: Oakville, Napa Valley VARIETAL: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon FERMENTATION: Typical for red wine AGING: French oak barrels (60% new, 40% once-used) CASES PRODUCED: 4483 cases HARVEST DATE: September 28, 2002 RELEASE DATE: September 2005 SKIN CONTACT: 18 days TIME: 18 months FIRST VINTAGE: 1997 Ideal growing conditions in 2002 allowed for perfect balance in the Martin Stelling Vineyard. Our two-acre block is a beautiful site where the vineyard tends to regulate itself. Complete suckering and good irrigation management seem to produce the light patterns needed for full development of the fruit. Low humidity in late September peaked flavor development and the fruit quickly developed rich, concentrated flavors of blackberry and cassis. Lower tonnage has produced a lovely wine. Martin Stelling Vineyard Cabernet continues to amaze us with all that it has to offer. Packed with blackberry, spice, vanilla and chocolate, the wine has a rich, coating, middle palate. Classically elegant yet concentrated and jammy, with beautiful structure and complexity, the wine's silky tannins marry with the oak, creating layers of interest that progress into a very long finish.
