Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Vogt Vineyard 2006
This 2006 Vogt Cabernet Sauvignon was made in both open-and closed-top tanks, which produced a wine with great concentration. The dark fruit flavors of berry and cassis are intensified by some natural floral and spice nuances. The palate is rich and coating with an intensity that comes from low-production, hillside fruit. Toasty oak integrates well with the firm yet polished tannins that, although approachable now, will resolve with some time in the bottle.
Established in 1997 by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. It is from some of the most coveted vineyards in the Napa and Sonoma valleys that the Nickel & Nickel wines are produced.
Dark red plum color. “Heavy,” oaky nose. Dark berry fruit on entry. Probably, the most interesting thing about this wine is that it has a nice smooth mouth-feel on entry. Then, mid-palate still serious tannin pops up. This gives it a “rougher” mouth-feel. Once you get past that, there are nice sensations on the back palate—berries, again, and a long, lingering aftertaste.

Gil Nickel of Far Niente produces extraordinary single vineyard Napa Valley Cabs under his Nickel & Nickel label, each is a very low prodction wine from a unique sub-appellation in Napa Valley. Nickel's only Howell Mountain offering comes from the 15 acre Vogt Vineyard, planted in 1997. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 93 points and said "This densely structured wine is so dry and tannic the palate just puckers up into resistance. Buried deep down are massive and properly proportioned flavors of blackberries, black currants, dark unsweetened chocolate and smoky new oak. This intense 100% Cabernet should begin to blossom by 2012 and last for many years." Very Limited!
