What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Winemakers Notes

In the mid 1990's, the Sangiacomo family planted this vineyard, a mile or so east of the Petaluma River. It sits on a steep, south-facing slope that is almost a 45-degree grade in some spots. Its 12 acres are planted entirely to Syrah, approximately four acres each to bud wood sourced respectively from Cornas, Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. The climate resembles Carneros, with cool, windy days and chilly nights throughout most of the summer. These conditions, along with the dramatic terrain, keep the crop size low and the wine intense. Reviews

The 2005 Syrah Old Lakeville Highway reveals plenty of bacon fat and black olive characteristics in its aromatic, outgoing personality. Medium to full-bodied, deep, rich, and pure, it is best consumed during its first 4-5 years of life. Robert Parker. A Syrah wine from California in USA. 2005 Neyers Syrah Old Lakeville Road 750ml

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by Vinfolio in Issue 116 The nose shows abundant black fruits: plum, berries, powdered violet. Beautifully smooth and ripe on the palate with violets and black fruits. The finish is long and balanced.

Huge, spicy and full of fruit. A bit lighter and it would be much better.

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 ($30; from a vineyard in a cool, windy site on the east side of the Petaluma River) Bright, deep red-ruby. Wild, scented nose offers smoke, truffle, pepper, leather, garrigue and a whiff of eucalyptus. Fat, thick and sweet, with a distinctly lush, tactile texture to its flavors of dark berries, spices, truffle and leather. Wonderfully dense wine with a long, ripely tannic finish. Like Cornas on steroids.
