Each Newton Vineyard wine embodies the founders’ vision to rise above the conventions of the valley in pursuit of unmatched quality. Crafted with an uncompromising commitment to true terroir expression, the Newton style is noted for its unadulterated richness and purity of fruit. The single square mile of hillside pioneered by the Newtons in 1977 is an impressive site, with expansive vistas of Napa Valley and beyond. The terraced mountain estate has 120 acres planted at elevations ranging from 500 to 1,600 feet above sea level. Each of the 112 distinctive vineyard blocks is planted to a specific varietal – Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon or Petit Verdot. These parcels reflect distinct soil types, sun exposures and individual microclimates. The blocks are fermented separately to contribute complexity to the final blended wine. As with the red varietals, the diverse Chardonnay blocks are hand-picked and vinified separately, providing the winemaker with a rich palette from which to choose when blending Newton Vineyard wines. The blocks are set among the native vegetation to preserve the ecosystem of the hillside. Recognized as an American pioneer of unfiltered wines, Newton Vineyard is dedicated to working in harmony with nature to transform grapes of uncompromised quality into wines of distinctive character. Based on an old-world style, Newton’s winemaking techniques include natural fermentation and bottling without filtration. Scents of smoke, fresh cut flowers and ripe fruit lead to a rich, multilayered wine, with tiers of ripe pear, spice, nutmeg and hazelnut, finishing with a burst of pure fruit and honeydew melon. Drink now through 2008.

The 2003 Chardonnay Red Label displays straightforward tropical fruit, heady alcohol, and good ripeness. Drink over the next 1ndash;3 years.

The 2001 Chardonnay Naturally Fermented (58% Napa and 42% Sonoma fruit) exhibits copious quantities of butterscotch and caramel characteristics in its evolved, fruity personality. Drink it over the next year.

Leuchtendes Gelb mit goldenem Schimmer. Reife Birnen, Quittensaft und Mandelblüten in der finessenreichen, burgundischen Nase, dahinter reife Stachelbeeren, getrocknete Aprikosen und Butterspekulatius. Fülliger Gaumen mit erfrischender Fruchtsäure und feiner Mineralik, wieder viel gelbe, reife Frucht und verführerische Exotik, nun auch Vanille und Mandelaromen, gute Balance bis ins fruchtbetonte Finale.

I've actually always loved the Newton Chardonnay, but for some reason, it had fallen off my radar until I retasted it recently. The 2008 vintage still has the prominent creamy oak and toasted nut notes that Newton is famous for, as well as ripe tropical fruit elements, but the wine seems brighter than I remember, with fresh acidity and a smooth, clean finish. A classic match for pasta alfredo, this wine would also be amazing with fish in cream sauce, grilled mushrooms or creamy cheeses such as brie, camembert or gouda.

Winemaker Notes - Enticing and delicate aromas of white nectarine and vanilla spice are intertwined with baked apple and caramel notes. The aromas carry through to the palate where they are accented by ripe melon and fresh pineapple flavors. The velvety mouthfeel of this well-balanced Chardonnay persists throughout the lingering and refreshing citrus finish. The lush and approachable flavors of this balanced wine make it a versatile, food-friendly choice. Winemaker Chris Millard suggests pairing with baked halibut, roasted poultry or a savory pecan tart.
