What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

First produced in 1990, this wine is one of the first unfiltered wines to be produced and sold in California. It has become the flagship marque of the winery. It is barrel fermented, then aged for 21 months in French oak.

Reviews

The Newton Chardonnay Red Label is fruity and rich, and in the mouth it has exotic citrus and vanilla bean flavors. The texture is sensuous and the finish is long, with hints of tropical mango fruit. All Newton Chardonnays are fermented by naturally to obtain the complex aromatics that are particular to our terroir. They begin the fermentation in handcrafted French oak barrels and rest happily there until they are ready to be bottled. They then go through the malolactic fermentation naturally. No acid is ever added in Newton Chardonnays.

Rating: 4/5 - As reviewed by Decanter Rich, opulent, nutty, toasty aromas and an almost overwhelming whiff of butter. The palate is more-ish, very full and viscous, with similar characteristics to the nose. The length goes on and on.

The Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay 1999 is bursting with numerous layers of fruit. It begins with hints of oranges and develops into peaches and passion fruit. All Newton Chardonnays are naturally fermented to obtain the complex aromatics, in handcrafted French oak barrels. They then go through the malolactic fermentation, again naturally. No acid is ever added in Newton Chardonnays. They have good structure because of controlling the yield in the vineyard.
