Food Pairings for Newton Red Label Chardonnay
Coming across a 2001 example of this wine was a lovely surprise. First off, this wine (from my experience) needs a little breathing/warming up time. Right out of the bottle the aromas seem a bit disjointed but within about 15 minutes, everything seems to come together. The body is quite rich yet there is a crisp acidity to keep things zingy (especially on the finish). The flavor profile and aromas are tricky: citrus, orange, pear, floral, and a tiny caramel note on the palate. In general, the 2001 is drinking exceptionally well.
First produced in 1990, this wine is one of the first unfiltered wines to be produced and sold in California. It has become the flagship marque of the winery. It is barrel fermented, then aged for 21 months in French oak.
