What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

First produced in 1990, this wine is one of the first unfiltered wines to be produced and sold in California. It has become the flagship marque of the winery. It is barrel fermented, then aged for 21 months in French oak.

Reviews

Newton Vineyard Naturally Fermented Chardonnay is a bright, refreshing wine. The nose gives off exotic fruits with hints of citrus. In the mouth, it is crisp and rich through the finish.

Coming across a 2001 example of this wine was a lovely surprise. First off, this wine (from my experience) needs a little breathing/warming up time. Right out of the bottle the aromas seem a bit disjointed but within about 15 minutes, everything seems to come together.
The body is quite rich yet there is a crisp acidity to keep things zingy (especially on the finish). The flavor profile and aromas are tricky: citrus, orange, pear, floral, and a tiny caramel note on the palate. In general, the 2001 is drinking exceptionally well.

Newton Vineyard Unfiltered Chardonnay was the first Unfiltered Chardonnay to be produced in Napa. It comes from Newton's own vineyard in Carneros, and is the cornerstone of the winery. The nose is filled with summer berries and citric aromas. The mouth feel is rich and the bouquet lingers forever.
