Neudorf "Moutere" Pinot Noir Nelson 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight. Fine, perfumed, a bit of obvious oak, very focused nose, fine dried herbs, almost a touch of lavender, tender one try, silky, fairly rich background note of blackberry, black raspberry, bit of mint, supple tannins, bright, firm classy finish, long fresh black raspberry fruit finish, very Burgundian bit of licorice on finish.

1978 and the New Zealand fine wine industry was almost non existent. We (Tim and I) pioneers-bigwere fresh from the “back to the land” movement of the late sixties. We wanted to make beautiful wine. We figured Tim’s masters in Animal Behaviour along with my unimpressive journalism career would be beneficial. Wrong. However we did have youth (temporary), self belief (unwarranted) and friends. At one stage we had four mortgages and three jobs each. Because there was so little known about basic viticulture in New Zealand we planted many varieties to see which ones were best suited to our soils. Merlot came and went as did Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and the dreaded Muller Thurgau. We were a bit hasty in rejecting Gewürztraminer and may look at that again. But we did it. We, and a whole heap of people – neighbours, family, friends and some fantastic staff. Each left a mark and many have gone onto work in bigger wineries or plant their own vineyard. Today 31 years later and we never feel we have it all sorted. We built our winery in 1980 with the intermittent help of a young chippie from down the road, using macrocarpa milled on site. Adapted from the orginal stables (circa 1850), it has been described by one writer as “an elegant shed” and houses the wine bar, office and white winery. At the back is a vineyard garden featuring an enormous Acer Negundo – perfect for climbing. Read less

Pale to medium ruby-purple colored the 2010 Moutere Pinot Noir has a slightly reduced rubber and tar character to begin giving way to a promising core of dark berries mulberries toast pepper tree bark and loam. Medium-bodied with a medium level of grainy tannins and mouth-filling black berry and savory flavors it finishes long with a touch of minerality in the finish. Drink this one now to 2017+. 91+ - Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Intense powerful and yet supremely elegant Pinot Noir with cherry mineral spice and nutty oak flavours. Long and linear - very classy wine that displays many subtle flavours on its lengthy finish. Accessible now but with good cellaring potential. Bob Campbell MW.

A ripe fresh and relatively deeply pitched nose features notes of plum dark berries and subtle spice elements. There is good punch and detail to the round and pure medium-bodied flavors that possess a generous even lush mouth feel all wrapped in a solidly persistent and complex finish. This is sufficiently forward that it could be enjoyed now but there is considerable upside development potential and I would thus advise waiting for a few years first. 2016+ Burghound.
