Neudorf Chardonnay Moutere 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Waxy yellow apple aromas emerge over toasty, vanilla cream and lightly gingery base notes. On the palate this is bright and intense with ripe fruit, but at the same time light and focused. This does turn a little creamy on back end, but the wildly bright and vibrant nature of this is fleshed out a bit by the creaminess. This finishes with long, sapid, solid citrus fruits and a touch of peach. A lovely wine that manages to be rich and fruity without being too fruity- it remains transparent right through the gently quartzy finale. Long and very fine. 92pts

1978 and the New Zealand fine wine industry was almost non existent. We (Tim and I) pioneers-bigwere fresh from the “back to the land” movement of the late sixties. We wanted to make beautiful wine. We figured Tim’s masters in Animal Behaviour along with my unimpressive journalism career would be beneficial. Wrong. However we did have youth (temporary), self belief (unwarranted) and friends. At one stage we had four mortgages and three jobs each. Because there was so little known about basic viticulture in New Zealand we planted many varieties to see which ones were best suited to our soils. Merlot came and went as did Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and the dreaded Muller Thurgau. We were a bit hasty in rejecting Gewürztraminer and may look at that again. But we did it. We, and a whole heap of people – neighbours, family, friends and some fantastic staff. Each left a mark and many have gone onto work in bigger wineries or plant their own vineyard. Today 31 years later and we never feel we have it all sorted. We built our winery in 1980 with the intermittent help of a young chippie from down the road, using macrocarpa milled on site. Adapted from the orginal stables (circa 1850), it has been described by one writer as “an elegant shed” and houses the wine bar, office and white winery. At the back is a vineyard garden featuring an enormous Acer Negundo – perfect for climbing. Read less

This is low and tight on the nose with slow to emerge notes of almond husk, dried apple fruit and a touch of toffee. The aromas are gentle but distinct and well-balanced, lending this a fine, elegant feel. In the mouth this is bright with real verve and energy. The oak is prominent but well integrated, with fruit that remains very much in the citrus end of the spectrum, adding resin and stony notes on the finale with just a soft suggestion of vanilla. This is intensely flavored in a sort of extracted way, but the texture ends up feeling so polished, round and frankly airy. Really a superb wine. 95pts

A flattering combination of power and elegance with impressive complexity. Appealing sweet fruit perfectly matched by fruity acidity. A mouth-watering combination of chalky mineral flavours, apple, citrus/lemon and subtle roasted nut and bran biscuit... Bob Campbell, MW. A Chardonnay wine from Nelson in New Zealand. 2010 Neudorf Chardonnay Moutere 750ml
