Nederburg White Blend Ingenuity 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

INGENUITY 2007 WHITE BLEND Ingenuity is Nederburg's platform for innovation and houses exciting new blends made from lesser known varietals or those combined in interesting new ways. VINEYARDS: The Ingenuity white blend features more varietals than any wine in South Africa. The eight-way blend is big and bold, reined in by some judicious wooding and structured to age for up to 10 years. It is led by sauvignon blanc (40%) sourced from Groenekloof and Durbanville, offering herbaceous aromas and crisp minerally, green flavours. The next biggest components are Chardonnay (20%), Viognier (15%) both from Durbanville and super-ripe bush-vine Chenin blanc (10%) from Darling. The balance is made up by Semillon (6%), Nouvelle (3%), Weisser riesling (3%) and Verdelho (3%). WINEMAKING: Of the Sauvignon blanc a small portion (6%) was fermented in French barriques. The Chardonnay was fermented and aged in new French 228-litre barrels, while the Verdelho and Nouvelle each spent five months in second-fill French oak. WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS: Flavour and Taste: A big and bold wine. Creamy textured with a core of racy acid. An amalgam of herbaceous, peach, floral and wood characters. When well-chilled the wine presents a crisp Sauvignon blanc profile but when lightly chilled the creamy oak vanillins come to the fore, with its spice and tannin characters giving it enough body and grip to match well with red meat dishes. Food pairing: Multi-layered dishes with a complexity of flavours, such as quail, duck, gunea fowl, rabbit, free range chicken or top-grade beef, prepared with spice, fruit and citrus seasonings. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS: Alcohol: 14.02% by volume. Residual sugar: 3.47g/l Total acidity: 7.00g/l pH : 3.29

Nederburg is South Africa's favourite name in wine, loved for a delicious combination of fruit and finesse. Established in 1791. near Paarl, we are South Africa's most awarded winery and the popular choice of critics and regular winelovers. Nederburg’s history, dating back to 1791, is remarkable for the pioneering and visionary ideals of those associated with the winery. And today, Nederburg is South Africa’s most widely awarded name in wine. Phillipus Wolvaart established the 49 hectares farm of Paarl Valley, and in just six years, the land was completely fruitful. Through revolutionary techniques such as cold fermentation, Johann Graue, who took ownership in 1937, established Nederburg as the leading producer of quality South African wines. Our viticulturists and cellar team travel widely to keep abreast of international best practice and we embark on extensive vine and winemaking research. Yet despite the many advances in wine-growing and winemaking technology available to us, we still follow a philosophy embedded by pioneering viticulturist and winemaker Johann Georg Graue. When he acquired the farm in 1937, he taught those working with him the critical importance of using superior fruit to make superior wine. It's a credo that has never changed. It informs every aspect of our wine-growing and winemaking and has been followed by all his successors. Read less
