Nederburg the Winemaster's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Color: Deep ruby. Bouquet: Aromas of blackcurrants and cherries with nuances of vanilla in the background. Palate: A full-bodied wine with ripe fruit, cherry and delicate oak spice flavours, firm tannins and a lingering aftertaste. Food suggestions: Excellent served with robust dishes such as patés and steaks, as well as full- bodied dishes such as beef stroganoff, winter stews, roasts and mature cheeses.
Very forward with the alcohol, it took a number of whiffs to finally detect a few essences of black fruits, a faint touch of licorice and some cedar. Dense and full-bodied on the palate, the flavors are earthy and spicy especially through the back of the nose. The finish is somewhat powdery; a woodiness that tastes of sappiness. I'm thinking this hasn't seen any oak at all even as sources say it has seen twelve months "in wood". Not the best example of a Cab Sauv, but passable for the Western Cape, I guess.
