What to Expect

Most famous as the predominant grape in the blended wines of Rioja, Tempranillo has emerged as a potential star in regions as disparate as Australia and California. Tempranillo generally produces medium-bodied wines with juicy acidity and bright raspberry fruit enlivened by notes of dusty earth, dry herbs and leather. Tempranillo is often blended with Grenache, Graciano, and Mazuelo (aka Carignan) in the production of red wine from the Rioja region of Spain.

"Nebro cuvee is produced only in exceptional vintages. Nebro is the name of the site of the estates oldest Tempranillo located 3 meters from Vega Sicilia. The 2005 Nebro is 100% Tempranillo from tiny yields of under 1 ton per acre. Malolactic occurred in barrel and the wine remained in oak for 18 months. The wine is a glass-coating opaque purple with a flamboyant bouquet of mocha, coffee, spice box, floral notes, and wild blackberry. More powerful than the Tinto, it will profit from 6-8 years of additional cellaring. Opulent, mouth-filling, and rich, the wine is a tour de force...98" WA 3/08

One of the best kept secrets of the Ribera Del Duero, with vineyards sitting next door to those of Vega Sicilia. Before estate bottling began at this winery in 1994, the fruit from the Finca Villacreces went into the wine of its famous neighbors. Made from 100% old-vine Tempranillo.
