Neal Family Vineyards Zinfandel Rutherford 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Date: November 2008 Tasting Bar Price: $2.80/taste Half Off Tuesday Price: $1.40/tasteORGANICNeal Family produces less than 10,000 cases of wine a year, and their dedication to quality farming and wine-making shows. This Zin has some guts to it--it isn't just another boring fruit-bomb. This wine has structure and fine tannins that make it well suited to food. Zin-lover's needn't be wary--the black cherry and boysenberry fruit is there, it is just supported by some supporting complexity. - Rob's Staff Pick 2006 was a great year for our Zinfandel vineyards, yielding lovely maturity and color for our fifth bottling. The recently re-planted vineyard at the Neal home ranch in Rutherford is providing delicious organically grown fruit. Using just enough Petite Syrah in the blend, we achieved the signature Neal Family Vineyards aroma, flavor and structure. Aged for 13 months in 50% new Hungarian and French oak barrels, the result is a delightful wine with complex flavors and color. When the winemaker’s wife uses magical as a descriptor, we think we did it right. Aromas of berries and spice, balanced oak toast and plum fruit rise from the glass, bringing back memories of strawberry jam cooking in the kitchen Floral characters mix with the rich, ripe fruit and are abundantly present along with hints of chocolate, pepper and spice. This has a well structured mouthfeel with a sweet texture to the moderate tannins (slightly more than last year,), making an enjoyable Zinfandel now in its youth or with additional bottle age, a more complex food friendly wine.Only 990 cases were produced.

The Neals have been farming biodynamic vineyards in the Napa Valley for more than 40 years, managing vineyards for and selling grapes to many of Napa Valley's best-known wineries. The Zinfandel is a magical wine with complex rich fruit and spice flavors.
