Neal Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004
Mother Nature reduced the crop of 2004 but what wonderful fruit she gave us. Our fruit is farmed organically on the same 9 vineyards weve sourced since the 2001 vintage. Natural fermentations driven by the indigenous yeast from each vineyard let the wines develop characters that reflect the soil where the fruit was grown. Extended macerations averaging 45 days shape the majority of mountain tannins into a rich, approachable texture. Aged in our cave for 22 months in our spice rack of predominately new French oak creates the final product. Tastings four months after bottling showed intensely aromatic flavors, full of toasty blackberry, vanilla, cherry candy and oak. In the mouth, it has a beautiful balance of power and elegance, concentrated and integrated with layers of fruit (cassis, chocolate, tobacco and black cherry) and a long finish. It is a wine full of great Cabernet Sauvignon varietal characteristics, yet very approachable considering the mountain fruit sources. A very dark wine. I had problems at first with the smell, but believe it might have been vegetal. It seemed to be a bit acidic in the nose as well. Rough at first with soft tannins, I agree that you might want to let it sit for awhile. The second glass seemed to be a little smoother. The finish lasted for a bit, but not too long. Enjoyed with friends before an Ole MIss Baseball game the atmosphere couldn't have been better.
External Reviews for Neal Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Powerful single vineyard Cabernet from Mark J. Neal and winemaker Gove Celio, from Neal's "home" vineyard of Howell Mountain, just downhill from the house where he raised his children.
Neal Family Cabernet Sauvignon Napa A surprising streak of weeds and greens runs the length of this otherwise very ripe wine, and while very admirable black cherry fruit is also much in evidence, the wine maintains a slight tilt to narrowness across the palate and into the finish. It claims both depth and richness as full allies, and the light-medium tannins in the finish suggest that this wine is one to put away for five or six years while it softens and opens up.
