briary varietal Zinfandel. deep raspberry, allspice, cloves and cinnamon, balanced with a center that is fleshy with hints of curry, leather and bright currents. Old Vine complexity and first growth quality.
This zin came as a slight surprise to me....It had some typical zin characteristics, but at the same time caught me off-guard with syrah-like tones. The nose in this wine was not overwhelmingly distinct, but the mouthfeel had some great spice to it, yet it also resembled the blackcurrant reduction sauce-like sweetness you would typically find in other varietals. These characteristics, although they might seem conflicting in nature, worked quite well with each other to deliver quite a well-balanced punch...
...which is a great thing in my opinion! The nose is perfume and pomegranate, with the pomegranate notes carrying to the flavor with a kick of spice. The wine is spicy and a bit light for my taste, but would be fantastic served with a light dinner in the summer time when most reds are too heavy but you're not in the mood for whites!
The nose here is slightly medicinal, but also gives off notes of sweet blackberries and delicious plum fruit. This is a bit light bodied for a Zinfandel, but could speak eloquently of the age of the vines, and I'm simply missing it. There is a nice boldness of the fruit and a hint of spice on the finish that is very Zin - or Zen, whichever way you look at it.
