Napa Cellars Zinfandel Napa Valley 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Limited Amounts Of New Oak Were Used To Preserve The Big Zinfandel Flavors While Still Imparting Warm Spice And Vanillin Characteristics “Bright brambly fruit, berry cobbler, and classic Zinfandel spice on the nose are complemented by juicy raspberry, baked cinnamon apples, and dried cherries on the palate. Petite Sirah was added to enhance the color and fill out the mid-palate with jammy flavors. This classic Napa Valley Zinfandel displays firm tannins and nuances of cocoa and spice on the finish.” —Joe Shirley

What does Napa stand for? For some, it conjures up images of five-star resorts and world renowned restaurants, but everyone agrees Napa Valley represents the pinnacle of great wines; one of the world's great wine capitals. Napa Cellars embodies the classic Napa Valley style - ripe, rich, balanced and collectible. Most importantly, the wines of Napa Cellars taste of the depth of this great wine region as much as the grapes themselves. In the valley's warm days and cool nights, our vineyards produce seven primary varieties for which Napa Valley has become famous. Try one of our classic wines, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them. Read less

I asked the man for a Zinfandel like the Rombauer Zin. For $26.75, I sure need a lot more. It was just another zin. Major flaw is being overpriced.

Interesting to say the least. Sure needs either a ton of air or much more bottle time. Deep dark glass staining purple. This one was over the top with richness and a syrupy texture, huge blueberry and blackberry fruit, lip-smacking tannins and a little heat. Drinks like an '02 Pride Mountiain PS in terms of rishness. I'm going to save the next one for a while and see where it goes.

Spice, cedar, and jammy scents. Dry, powdery coffee flavor.

This is a great bottle for those who enjoy zin. Spicy, fruit forward and very big. I love this style and this wine.

Some sharp cheese nose, like a hard parmesan. Some sulfur tones on the nose. Lots of salinity on the palate. White pepper. Spice. Some straw. Red berries show through, but it's a tad unbalanced for me. - Tasted at Schreiner's Winers zin tasting 9/18/10

I little young of course but again, Orin Swift has come through!!! Let sit open in fridge a bit before tasting - (my opinion on this type wine and I feel a chill makes it better) - spice/black rasberry/pepper on the nose - Jammy fruits - smooth in the mouth with the famous Prisoner finish - gotta love The Prisoner - YUMMY!!!

The nose swirls with chocolate, tobacco, cigar box, pepper, plum, and oak. Allow 30 minutes for taming, and this wine will stalk the palate with expressions of chocolate-covered cherry, cigar, and dark fruit, including black raspberry and plum, followed by a medley of red fruits, including cherry and ripe wild berries. Strong tannins leave a dry, velvety mouth feel that supports lengthy, tobacco-laced and chocolate finish, all punctuated with a zingy but soft acidity.

92 points - Wine Spectator "Offers both style and structure, with lively aromas of black raspberry, cracked pepper and mocha, with plush and layered flavors of wild berry, fresh sage and licorice. Ripe tannins sneak in on the finish. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Charbono and Grenache. Drink now through 2014." (06/09) Yet another beautiful vintage of the prisoner from Orin Swift. This is not a wine to put in your cellar. Big, bright and all about immediate drinking. With vineyards sources such as Duarte, Toffanelli and David Fulton, there is no wonder why this wine is so beautiful and powerful. 50% Zinfandel, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 9% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono and 1% Grenache.

89 - 91 Points - Wine Advocate"The 2008 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet exhibits a dark, dense ruby color along with a big, sweet nose of roasted Provencal herbs, smoked meats, black currants, cherries, licorice, and seaweed. Ripe, medium-bodied, and already delicious, it should drink nicely for 4-5 years. "

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 96 COLLECTIBLE of Wine Spectator 2008 Top 100Really dense and locked up now, this is packed with dark fig, currant and blackberry fruit shrouded by layers of tar, hot stone, bittersweet licorice and espresso. The long, dense finish has a great tug of iron buried within it. Best from 2011 through 2030.Wine Advocate ReviewRated 94+The 2005 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is a wine that probably needs 7-10 years of bottle age. Possibly the most backward and closed Beaucastel made since the 1995, the wine has very high tannins, seems totally closed aromatically, but in the mouth is a weighty wine exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color and tight aromatics consisting of new saddle leather, porcini, meat juices, licorice, tar, and black fruits. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, very tannic, and structured in a dramatically masculine, ageworthy style. This is one for the younger generation or those with considerable patience. I can't see it being close to drinkable before 2014 and lasting up to 30 or more years.

I love what he's done with his 2008 The Prisoner, a blend of 46% Zinfandel, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Syrah, Petite Sirah, Charbono, and Grenache. With over 15% alcohol, this is a big, sexy, fruit bomb boasting abundant amounts of black... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. The 2008 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the few outstanding wines produced in this vintage. More evolved than Beaucastelandrsquo;s wines tend to be, it reveals a healthy dark plum/ruby color, notes of licorice, meat juices, smoked game, black currants and garrigue, medium to full body, silky tannins, good freshness, surprising depth for the vintage and a long finish. Drink it over the next decade.
