Napa Cellars Zinfandel Napa Valley 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

"This inky/ruby colured cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cheery fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mouvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years... Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025..." 96/100 pts. (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Feb 2004)

What does Napa stand for? For some, it conjures up images of five-star resorts and world renowned restaurants, but everyone agrees Napa Valley represents the pinnacle of great wines; one of the world's great wine capitals. Napa Cellars embodies the classic Napa Valley style - ripe, rich, balanced and collectible. Most importantly, the wines of Napa Cellars taste of the depth of this great wine region as much as the grapes themselves. In the valley's warm days and cool nights, our vineyards produce seven primary varieties for which Napa Valley has become famous. Try one of our classic wines, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them. Read less

A very good Côtes du Rhône, who would compete with many small Chateauneuf. Mourvedre brings some animal and pepper twist, this is still a full bodied wine, it is very good now but can be kept one or two years without to be worried.

I drank a bottle of this Rhone Valley treat with a good friend of mine recently and was very impressed. I found this on a massive wine list a social club I am a member of has currently. I believe the club price was $38/bottle, but well worth it in my opinion. This had a dark red color with similar dark fruit and a touch of pepper from what I recall. This blend matched perfected with the seared scallops and Canadian bacon we were snacking on at the time.

Beaucastel has been on a terrific qualitative roll over the last four vintages, and the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape (which Francois Perrin feels is similar to the 1990, although I don t see that as of yet) is a 15,000-case blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance split among the other permitted varietals of the appellation. This inky/ruby/purple-colored cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cherry fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mourvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years, not to re-emerge for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

Vivid and racy, with rich blackberry and currant fruit, lots of tar, smoke and mineral notes and a rich, sweet, chocolaty finish. Nice flashes of [i]terroir[n] lurk underneath all the fruit, too. Serious structure here, but surprisingly accessible no... Wine Spectator. ...Brooding, highly complex nose combines dark berries, licorice, minerals, fresh blood, smoked meat, animal fur, truffle and earth. Lush and seamless; an essence of gamey black fruits. A fabulous year for the reds of both Coudoulet and Beaucastel, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet (about 10,000 cases produced) offers a rich perfume of melted licorice, smoke, saddle leather, blackberries, cherries, and a sug...
