Napa Cellars Zinfandel Napa Valley 1999

Winemaker's Notes:

The 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a classic blend of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Counoise. Aged in foudre prior to being bottled without filtration, it represents the essence of Beaucastel's distinctive and atypical Mourvedre-dominated style of Chateauneuf du Pape. Its inky/black/purple color is accompanied by a fabulous perfume of licorice, smoke, truffles, tapenade, blackberries, and cassis. Extremely full-bodied, with masses of extract, high tannin, and a structured, long finish (lasting nearly a minute), this sumptuous effort requires 6-7 years of bottle age. It should keep for 25-35 years.

What does Napa stand for? For some, it conjures up images of five-star resorts and world renowned restaurants, but everyone agrees Napa Valley represents the pinnacle of great wines; one of the world's great wine capitals. Napa Cellars embodies the classic Napa Valley style - ripe, rich, balanced and collectible. Most importantly, the wines of Napa Cellars taste of the depth of this great wine region as much as the grapes themselves. In the valley's warm days and cool nights, our vineyards produce seven primary varieties for which Napa Valley has become famous. Try one of our classic wines, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them. Read less

Tight and focused on the nose with beautiful, spicy, leathery, clean aromas that are still youthful with hints of chalk, spice, and dark fruit On entry this is almost voluptuous with really vibrant acids with decisive cut and round, ample tannins that segue into spicy dark cherry fruit that shows a slightly dried edge. Ultimately this is a little touch but it does exhibit lovely focused, dark fruit and good length, with very chocolatey tannins offering a subtle density here. 93pts

The 1999 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is a profoundly rich, concentrated, classic vin de garde. Made from 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the remainder a blend of other varietals, it is one of the blackest, most opaque-col... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Pale gold color. Spicy and deep but highly aromatic and fresh on the nose, with youthful suggestions of crushed grapes, chlorophyll and mint. Dense, spicy and intense in the mouth; quite light on its feet. Flavors of lemon, peach and grapefruit are g... Stephen Tanzer. Remarkable effort in the rsquo;99 vintage. Beautiful. Inky-black and very intense, built in a modern style, like a top Bordeaux classified-growth, with plenty of freshly crushed berries, cigar box, citrus, roasted chestnuts, tobacco and jammy plum to provide much pleasure. Ripe, firm tannins need time to soften the monolithic finish. Best from 2004 through 2020.

This wine sees no new oak, and is aged completely in foudre prior to bottling without filtration. The 1999 Chacirc;teauneuf-du-Pape Hommage agrave; Jacques Perrin appears to be a legend. Made from a classic blend of 60% Mourvegrave;dre, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Counoise, this limited edition (5,000 bottles) cuveacute;e exhibits perfect equilibrium, but needs a decade of cellaring. It would be a shame to drink it before that.
