Napa Cellars Zinfandel 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Napa Cellars Zinfandel opens with notes of strawberry and fresh-baked rhubarb pie. Jammy with toast and spice, the aromas lead to juicy ripe berry flavors with a long fruit finish that is rich with dried cherry, light black pepper and toasty notes. The wine has firm tannins and a smooth medium-body that rounds out the balanced palate.

What does Napa stand for? For some, it conjures up images of five-star resorts and world renowned restaurants, but everyone agrees Napa Valley represents the pinnacle of great wines; one of the world's great wine capitals. Napa Cellars embodies the classic Napa Valley style - ripe, rich, balanced and collectible. Most importantly, the wines of Napa Cellars taste of the depth of this great wine region as much as the grapes themselves. In the valley's warm days and cool nights, our vineyards produce seven primary varieties for which Napa Valley has become famous. Try one of our classic wines, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them. Read less

Sweet and dusty on the nose, this shows aromas of tight red fruits flecked with mineral and allspice notes. On entry the texture is quite silky with black cherry fruit that is threaded with a contrasting medicinal edge. There is lovely purity and aromatic fruit, violet and sweet spice notes that are wrapped up in a restrained, slightly chewy package. The finish is long and pure, exhibiting excellent tension and focus in the mouth and right through the end. A bit reticent today but really very fine. 94pts

Yummy! Smoother, don't get hit with peppery taste. More fruity than spicy.

I only recently got more into drinking and rating wine, and this is the bottle that got me into it. It blew my mind. The deep complex blend of reds was the most amazing wine I have every tasted.

Delicious, complex, deep, and cavernous. Like bunny's favorite hiding places.

Had this on Febriary 18 and had to refuse it, even after decanting. The 2010 vintage is nowhere close to the quality of earlier vintages like '05 and '08. No real mouth feel on the start and absolutely no tannin on the finish. Exceptionally disappointing for what has been a solid zin/cab blend in recent years.

Napa Valley, CaliforniaOrin Swift The Prisoner is a must-try red wine gem from a gifted and fast-rising winemaker, Dave Phinney. Considering that Wine Spectator has selected The Prisoner to join the ranks of the magazine's Top 100 Wines of the Year not just in one recent year (#47 in 2009 for the 2007 vintage) but 3 times in the past 6 years, it is nearly inconceivable that Dave Phinney began his winemaking career with 2 tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes just a year out of college in 1998! He recently purchased 48 acres of land in the hills above Oakville and hopes one day to build a winery there. We can all look forward to enjoying the evolution of Orin Swift Cellars! The 2010 vintage received a 90-point rating from Wine Spectator. We expect an even higher score for this one, so don't wait!Orin Swift The Prisoner is 51% Zinfandel blended with 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono and 1% Grenache. The wine is dark red, almost garnet hue with bright red on the rim. Aromas of Bingcherry, espresso, roasted fig and vanillin oak accents are persistent. The entry is powerful and generous supported with lively acidity while flavors of ripe raspberry, pomegranate and wild berry fruit linger harmoniously. It was aged in both new and seasoned French and American oak. The wine is soft and round with weight, length and structure and good acidity to soften its big fruit. On the finish it is long and lingering with soft, velvety tannins.Enjoy Orin Swift The Prisoner with roast pork, grilled chicken, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and cheeses.

Orin Swift s Proprietary Blend The Prisoner has become the stuff of legend for many of us in the industry. We can never get enough - it always sells out - and (most importantly) the juice in the bottle is fantastic year in and year out. This blends the lush berry flavors of Zinfandel, the power and concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dark black fruit of Syrah, the intensity and structure of Petite Sirah, the flesh of Charbono, and a hint of Grenache - all combined for a decadent wine with great complexity.

Dark, dense and very closed now, this has a tremendous core of crushed plum, linzer torte and blackberry confiture waiting in reserve. Ample singed cedar and mesquite, warm paving stone and black tea notes lurk in the background and glide through the finish. Features serious grip, but wonderful integration. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2035.

Vivid ruby. Fresh raspberry and cherry on the intensely perfumed nose. Sappy and sweet, with deep red fruit preserve flavors and hints of succulent herbs and rose pastille. Packs a punch but also shows impressive energy and balance. The raspberry note carries through on the finish, which also features a suave, slow-building note of star anise.

Interestingly enough, even though many of the 2010 Perrin et Fils selections from the southern Rhone were scheduled to be bottled right after my visit, the 2010 Beaucastel had already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3andndash;5 years of cellaring, and it should last for 25andndash;30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do.
