What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

VINEYARD INFORMATIONMuch of the fruit for this wine was sourced from the warmer regions of Napa Valley, including Calistoga, St. Helena and Pope Valley. In 2005, the long growing season and moderate harvest allowed the grapes to hang on the vine for longer than usual. In some cases the grapes were not picked until the second week of November. Because Zinfandel ripens unevenly, the extended hang time was a blessing and helped develop the intense fruit characteristics seen in this wine. WINEMAKING The Napa Cellars 2005 Zinfandel was tank fermented in separate lots for approximately 10 days. The read more...

This is an example of a nearly perfect textbook flavor profile for a (red) zinfandel from the Napa Region! The winemaker has once again outdone himself in making a varietal that is text-book in flavor for a wine in my opinion. This delightful taste treat hits your tongue with a ton of jam on the fore of the palate followed by a classic explosion of berries and fruit through the mouth and finishes a second after you swallow as a starburst of white pepper reaches from the back of your throat and pulls your tongue to the back of your mouth to fully absorb every last drop of the spice and flavor that you’ve unleashed upon it!

Wine Tasting NotesNapa Cellars Zinfandel is dark purple and opaque in the glass. The nose reveals intense, ripe berries, candied strawberry preserves and cinnamon spice. The palate follows with juicy, rounded fruit flavors that mingle with layers of warm, supple tannins leading to a long, plush finish. Perfect with barbeque, try pairing the wine with Baby Back Ribs or Gourmet Pulled-Pork Sandwiches garnished with sweet and spicy coleslaw.

Napa Cellars Zinfandel is the perfect middle ground between the spicy Zinfandels of the Sierra Foothills and the fruity jammy Zinfandels of Sonoma. Both characteristics can be found in moderation with this wine. You can expect a swirl of the glass to reveal intense, sweet ripe berries, cinnamon and black pepper spice with elements of sun-baked earth. Zinfandel and BBQ are a natural fit.

2005 Napa Valley Zinfandel has bright cherry, raspberry fruit and some nice spice. This medium bodied wine has rich tannins that are smooth and supple, with balanced acidity. A little time in the bottle will make the elegance of this wine really
