Nalle Zinfandel Dry Creek 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Classic briar wood, and smoke top notes over a base of cherry fruit with a little supporting oak note. Spicy on entry, with juicy bright acids supporting a light yet powerful palate impression full of fresh sour cherry and raspberry fruit wrapped in briar with black cherry skin notes on the long finish. This is long and tense, with fine cut to the fresh fruit. 91 points

Nalle Winery:
Our wines are the greatest... blah, blah, blah, ...'cuz Doug Nalle and Andrew Nalle are genius winemakers... blah, blah, blah, ...and our growers are the smartest, most hard-working in the grape universe. You can drink our wines young, old and in between and they match perfectly with any and all foods. More sober notes follow on our Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Went to the Dry Creek area in search of the best Zin in the valley. Visited several renown Zin producers and asked at each of the tasting rooms what "little gem" they could let me in on. Every one of them said to try Nalle. So I did. What a treat! Andrew (the wine maker) was nice enough to open his tasting area and introduce me to his world class wines. Balanced and fruit forward - a true treat for any Zinfandel drinker.

Killer. Light for a zin and loaded with bright fruit and earth. Has that Dry Creek dust.

Outstanding. One of the most memorable zins I've ever had. Loads of berry & spice, without being overly alcoholic or over the top. Sublime.

A puzzling Zinfandel. Offers focused boysenberry, spice and mineral aromas, marred by a medicinal herb edge that detracts from the dry and earthy finish. Drink now through 2016.

Dry Creek Valley, CaliforniaNalle Zinfandel is a classic Dry Creek Valley Zin made by Andrew Nalle under the supervision of his famous father, winemaker Doug Nalle. Nalle is a small family run winery with father, mother and son all having important roles in daily operations. Since the first vintage in 1984 Doug Nalle has refused to give in to the changing fashion for high alcohol, jammy zins. As a result, they remain off the radar of the mainstream wine critics, and that's OK with them. With modest alcohol levels, tasteful oak treatment, and incredible age-ability, this estate remains one of the benchmark Dry Creek Zinfandels being made today. We enjoyed a visit at their distinctive Healdsburg winery in September 2012, just two days before crush, with great anticipation in the air for a promising new vintage! Sure enough, the New York Times panel confirmed our expectations in late December, citing the 2010 Nalle Zin as one of its top two picks! The 2012 vintage was just released and it's another winner. John Gilman rated it 92+ in View From the Cellar!Nalle Zinfandel is a two-vineyard blend of 50% Bernier-Sibary and 50% Henderlong Home Ranch composed of 82% Zin, 9% Petite Sirah and 9% Carignane. The wine is garnet red with medium body--expressive rather than blockbuster in style. Imagine doses of intense strawberry-pomegranate dipped in crme fraiche. Flavors of spicy Dry Creek blackberry, raspberry and red licorice finish with soft, velvety tannins. The wine is aged for 11 months in 25% new French oak before bottling. Only 473 cases were produced and the wine is already sold out at the winery.Enjoy Nalle Zinfandel with roast pork, grilled chicken, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and cheeses.

Remarkably low in alcohol (13.6%!) for a Zinfandel, the Nalle is not your typical extracted, jammy wine, but rather an elegant, full-bodied red — an excellent alternative to a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Tangy red fruit and soft blackberry are laced with violets and myriad black spices, creating delicate layers of complexity that unfold in the mouth. A truly amazing, high-end wine for a fraction of what it’s worth.
