Naked Missionary Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Everyone has their position. Missionary is one of ours. Yes, simple and straightforward... and always satisfying. The 100% oak aging offers good structure and subtle tannins followed by full aromas and flavors of ripe cherries and blackberry with a hint of anise. This Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent companion to roast pork or lamb during the main course or for dessert try it with a good Stilton.

The Naked Winery Missionary Cabernet Sauvignon is untraditional in just about every way, from the name to the bottle to the flavors and finish, this wine is unabashedly nudist. The nose has distinct aromas of cabbage and a stinky cheese, maybe Stilton? Where I was expecting chocolate and cherry, Naked gave me veggies and dairy, blindfolding me and taking me on a journey. The wine is dry when I wanted wet, salty when I wanted sweet, and is someone shoving an olive in my mouth? This Cab had its way with me.

This wine didn't come together exactly as I'd hoped. At first the smell is very earthy and primal, like musk and sweat. I was hoping for some dark cherries and a little tang in my mouth, but it just seemed off and bitter, instead of having a pleasant bite. After a few more sniffs and sips I felt about the same as I would if I were playing tonsil hockey with my high school boyfriend's gym bag.

The Missionary Cab reminds me of the days I spent in the barn with my first crush. Dark and musty, with the scent of animals not too far away. It's salty and dry - giving my mouth the same feeling as when I was standing next to him helping to brush down the horses. The finish is nervous and young - just like I was back then. But then again, just give it some time - it'll unfold for you and wrap you warmth - just like a full grown woman.
