Murphy Goode the Fumé 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 vintage boasts flavors and aromas of citrus and tropical fruits expressed over a bright, yet rich mouthfeel. The wine was predominately fermented in stainless steel to retain the fruit aromatics and a portion was barrel fermented to increase the texture of the wine. We also use a clone of Sauvignon Blanc called Sauvignon Musqué to add a hint of orange blossom and tangerine.

At Murphy-Goode, winemaking isn’t just a family busness; it’s a family tradition – one that’s endured since its founding in 1985 by friends Tim Murphy, Dale Goode and Dave Ready, and lives on in its current owners, the Jackson family. It’s a tradition based on a shared appreciation of friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Although currently more Bordeaux focused, in the early days of Murphy-Goode “a good bottle of wine” meant one of two things: Fumé Blanc or Chardonnay, both made with grapes harvested entirely from Murphy Ranch and Murphy-Goode Vineyard. But as the popularity of their wine grew, so did the need for additional vineyards. The solution? Simply bring more friends into the fold by creating partnerships with local farmers and neighbors who shared the Murphy-Goode vision. In the summer of 2006, one such neighbor, friend and fellow winemaker Jess Jackson, displayed such a strong belief in this vision that he purchased Murphy-Goode. The winery is still very much a family-oriented operation today, with the Murphys retaining their original vineyards and David Ready, Jr., son of one of the original founders, continuing on as Murphy-Goode’s winemaker. Though now, of course, they create more than just Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. In fact in recent years, as newly planted vineyards have come into production, the winery’s focus has shifted from primarily white wine to distinctive reds – particularly Bordeaux blends produced from grape varieties that excel in the Alexander Valley.
