Murphy-Goode Sémillon North Coast Late Harvest 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 harvest was ideal for producing our Late Harvest Semillon. The Botrytis, noble rot, was in full bloom throughout our estate block and after many months out on the vine the grapes developed perfectly. The wine opens with a voluptuously sweet scent of honeysuckle and leads into a powerfully rich body with flavors of dried apricots and white peach. The wine closes with a resonating finish. This will be a favorite for years to come.

At Murphy-Goode, winemaking isn’t just a family busness; it’s a family tradition – one that’s endured since its founding in 1985 by friends Tim Murphy, Dale Goode and Dave Ready, and lives on in its current owners, the Jackson family. It’s a tradition based on a shared appreciation of friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Although currently more Bordeaux focused, in the early days of Murphy-Goode “a good bottle of wine” meant one of two things: Fumé Blanc or Chardonnay, both made with grapes harvested entirely from Murphy Ranch and Murphy-Goode Vineyard. But as the popularity of their wine grew, so did the need for additional vineyards. The solution? Simply bring more friends into the fold by creating partnerships with local farmers and neighbors who shared the Murphy-Goode vision. In the summer of 2006, one such neighbor, friend and fellow winemaker Jess Jackson, displayed such a strong belief in this vision that he purchased Murphy-Goode. The winery is still very much a family-oriented operation today, with the Murphys retaining their original vineyards and David Ready, Jr., son of one of the original founders, continuing on as Murphy-Goode’s winemaker. Though now, of course, they create more than just Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. In fact in recent years, as newly planted vineyards have come into production, the winery’s focus has shifted from primarily white wine to distinctive reds – particularly Bordeaux blends produced from grape varieties that excel in the Alexander Valley. And so the tradition continues: friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Read less

As I've gotten older I've become more enamored with crisp and full-flavored white wines which have a nice long finish. Unlike so many others, this wine does all that and more. You really can't beat it for the price. It's wonderful as an aperitif or accompanying raw shellfish especially oysters. I'm glad I purchased a case of it.

This Murphy-Goode Sauvignon Blanc is tart and crisp. The color is pale gold with a touch of green. The smells are of grass and grapefruit. The taste is of meons and grapefruit. The finish is refreshing and vibrant. I paid $8.49 recently.

Murphy Goode Fume is made of mainly Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of Semillon. It was predominately fermented in stainless steel to retain the expression of bright citrus and tropical fruit aromatics while the balance was barrel fermented in French and American oak to increase the mouthfeel and develop lush flavors of white peach and honeydew melon.

Inviting aromas of black cherry and thyme deliver a wine with rich flavors of blackberry jam, nutmeg and dark fruit. The blend was aged in small oak cooperage to polish the soft tannins and complement the finish with a sweet toastiness.

WA 90pts. - Winemaker Notes - The 2009 vintage was predominately fermented in stainless steel to retain the citrus and tropical fruit aromatics while the balance was barrel fermented in French and American oak to increase the mouthfeel and develop flavors of white peach and honeydew melon. We also use a clone of Sauvignon Blanc called Sauvignon Musque to add a hint of orange blossom and tangerine and, for the first time ever, we blended in some estate Semillon. The Semillon adds wonderful floral notes and nice texture.
