Murphy-Goode Fumé Blanc Alexander Valley 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Winery notes: Our Fum Blanc is mostly stainless steel tank fermented to promote the varietal flavors that each vintage offers us from the vineyard. A small portion of the blend is barrel fermented in neutral small oak cooperage to increase the texture of the final wine without adding oak flavors or aromas. Our goal is to create a wine with great Sauvignon Blanc rich fruit intensity. Winemaker David Ready Jr.

At Murphy-Goode, winemaking isn’t just a family busness; it’s a family tradition – one that’s endured since its founding in 1985 by friends Tim Murphy, Dale Goode and Dave Ready, and lives on in its current owners, the Jackson family. It’s a tradition based on a shared appreciation of friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Although currently more Bordeaux focused, in the early days of Murphy-Goode “a good bottle of wine” meant one of two things: Fumé Blanc or Chardonnay, both made with grapes harvested entirely from Murphy Ranch and Murphy-Goode Vineyard. But as the popularity of their wine grew, so did the need for additional vineyards. The solution? Simply bring more friends into the fold by creating partnerships with local farmers and neighbors who shared the Murphy-Goode vision. In the summer of 2006, one such neighbor, friend and fellow winemaker Jess Jackson, displayed such a strong belief in this vision that he purchased Murphy-Goode. The winery is still very much a family-oriented operation today, with the Murphys retaining their original vineyards and David Ready, Jr., son of one of the original founders, continuing on as Murphy-Goode’s winemaker. Though now, of course, they create more than just Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. In fact in recent years, as newly planted vineyards have come into production, the winery’s focus has shifted from primarily white wine to distinctive reds – particularly Bordeaux blends produced from grape varieties that excel in the Alexander Valley. And so the tradition continues: friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Read less

Clear; moderate intensity; pale gold core to platinum rim; low development; bits of cork; moderate- viscosity. Healthy; moderate intensity; moderate- development; yeast, fennel, flower, speariment. Dry/off-dry; Moderate acidity; low tannin; medium body; balanced alcohol; creamy apple butter, toasted nuts; medium finish. Had gone through malo and significant barrel aging which subdued all of the fresh fruit and vegetal qualities of the wine. Warm baked aromas continued to develop in glass.

This was surprisingly great. Don't judge a wine by its label... It was very smooth with a balance between sweet and dry. It is noteworthy enough by itself without food, desert, or any other non-sense with it.

Wine Tasting NotesThis is a wine that exhibits flavors of mango, pineapple, melon and pear, with touches of lemon zest and tangerine, or as we like to call it, "lip-puckering goodness." A round, yet vibrant wine, The Fume goes down easy with oysters on the half-shell by the dozen. Not shy around seafood of any kind.
