Murphy-Goode Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Big juicy bunches of blackberry and black cherry on the nose with a bit of an herbal note to it as well. In the mouth, gripping tannins hit immediately and don't let go, almost but not quite masking the blackberry and black cherry fruit with a finish of dark chocolate and coffee. It's possible this will continue to soften over time, so it may be good to give this a bit more time in the bottle.

At Murphy-Goode, winemaking isn’t just a family busness; it’s a family tradition – one that’s endured since its founding in 1985 by friends Tim Murphy, Dale Goode and Dave Ready, and lives on in its current owners, the Jackson family. It’s a tradition based on a shared appreciation of friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Although currently more Bordeaux focused, in the early days of Murphy-Goode “a good bottle of wine” meant one of two things: Fumé Blanc or Chardonnay, both made with grapes harvested entirely from Murphy Ranch and Murphy-Goode Vineyard. But as the popularity of their wine grew, so did the need for additional vineyards. The solution? Simply bring more friends into the fold by creating partnerships with local farmers and neighbors who shared the Murphy-Goode vision. In the summer of 2006, one such neighbor, friend and fellow winemaker Jess Jackson, displayed such a strong belief in this vision that he purchased Murphy-Goode. The winery is still very much a family-oriented operation today, with the Murphys retaining their original vineyards and David Ready, Jr., son of one of the original founders, continuing on as Murphy-Goode’s winemaker. Though now, of course, they create more than just Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. In fact in recent years, as newly planted vineyards have come into production, the winery’s focus has shifted from primarily white wine to distinctive reds – particularly Bordeaux blends produced from grape varieties that excel in the Alexander Valley. And so the tradition continues: friendship, hard work, a wicked sense of humor and, of course, a good bottle of wine. Read less

I have really been shopping around for wines under 20 bucks. This is definitely one of the best so far. Very good color. Great Nose. Full bodied. Rich in fruit and great flavor. Bold. Beats many wines up to $30. The next wine I have in the next price range is BV Rutherford Cab $21. But for anything less than $21 I haven't tasted one better. GL trying to beat this one.

I have to have both aroma and taste to provide a high rating. This wine meets both my criteria and I think its a great drinking wine which is very smooth. My initial reaction to the tasting was really fruity with both blackberry and cherries. If you also like pinot noir’s I think you will like this wine because of its fruity notes. The taste is both crisp and refreshing.

I really can't add much to the above reviews... A definite bargain for the under $20 cab crowd. Luv it!

After letting the wine breathe for about 30 minutes after aeration, as the alcohol was over powering the fruit aromas, it was delightful in the cherry and blackberry flavors. Swirling it around my tongue also brought out the almond taste. The oakiness stayed on the middle of the tongue and finished off with a black liquorish taste, which I find a bit harsh. Compared to my regular monthly case wine buy of Rutherford Ranch Cabernet, I find it not as smooth, maybe a bit darker, not as luscious in it's fruit, however a decent buy when it was on sale for $9.99. Rutherford is at $14.99 and Murphy Goode is the same price when it is not on sale.

I was surprised by fruitiness of this wine. As others have mentioned, it is rife with cherries and blackberries, and my first reaction - after letting it breathe a bit - was that it drank a lot like a Pinot. While nothing spectacular, this would be a great everyday drinking wine.

The second generation has clearly taken over at this landmark Alexander Valley winery, and it’s clearly reflected in the wines. They’re bigger, bolder, blacker and more – let’s say “assertively masculine” – across the board. Perhaps that’s what happens when three men turn their winery over to five sons: the young dudes have gotta outdo dad.Because I learned to appreciate Alexander Valley originally via Murphy-Goode wines, I keep tasting them and looking for ones I would drink. I have mostly passed on the Zins recently (so over the top you can’t see the top) so I never thought I would find some personal pleasures among the Cabernets – much less a baby-vine Cab.When I first nosed this wine, from four-year old vines, I didn’t know what to think: it smelled like mushrooms, scrambled eggs, and blackberry pancakes all at once. But after six hours, 24 hours, and 72 hours, it smelled exactly the same – the sign of a wine that’s true to something intrinsic, not tarted up. In your mouth, it’s full of sweet black fruit laced with baking spice delivered in a multi-layered texture that’s warm without alcoholic heat and that expands all the way through to the finish. Worth seeking out for both pleasure and originality.
