What to Expect

Chenin Blanc is one of the world's least-known and appreciated great white wine grapes. Originally from France's Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc has spread around the globe and is used for virtually all styles of white wine, from crisp and lean to rich, round full table wines, sparkling wines, and some of the most decadent dessert wines made. Classic descriptors for the flavors of Chenin Blanc include peach, honey, lanolin, marzipan, and quince jelly though the dry style from South Africa, where the wines are known as Steen, often exhibits more tropical fruit notes that recall pineapple and guava.

Winemakers Notes

The 2008 Mullineux White marks a very exciting debut from Chris and AndreaMullineux (almost as exciting indeed as their newly born son John!) who've gonethat extra mile to source top, sustainably-grown fruit from former TMVsuppliers in this prized viticultural area, Swartland. In an Old World stylenot dissimilar to the best of the Southern Rhone, this blend of 86% CheninBlanc, 7% Clairette, 7% Viognier, wild yeast fermented in 225 litre Frenchbarriques, before being bottled, unfined and unfiltered (all 330 cases of it).The wine displays a nuanced, composed nose of white pepper, wet-stone andherbal, citrus notes.

Reviews

Berry Bros & Rudd review: Still a babe (!), it gives little away on the palate, bar a suave, stony pure, beeswax and peach kernel feel, echoing a fine Alsacien Pinot Blanc or Sylvaner, with little clue either to its 13.5% alcohol or Cape provenance. Shouldcontinue to improve beautifully over the next 5 years, till 2014...match withtuna or other sea fish.(David Berry Green, BBR Buyer)

Berry Bros & Rudd review: This blend of 86% Chenin Blanc with Clairette and Viognier has a moreRhône-like than Loire character. Fermented with natural yeasts in olderoak, it has a rich, powerful nose with apple fruit and the fat, lemonycharacter of youth. On the palate this is restrained and maintains thatpowerful, textural density, with a taut mineral and white fruit edge, its leesyweight just adding a touch of breadth on the finish.(91/100 points TheWine Gang - Top 20 BBR Wines - July 09)

Rose review: Blending chenin blanc with clairette and viognier, the lees stirring in cask ofthis Cape dry white brings complexity to an old vine; rich dried fruit cut bycitrusy acidity.(Anthony Rose - Something for the weekend - The Independent -22-Aug-2009)
