Mullan Road Red Blend Cakebread Columbia Valley 2014

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Mullan Road Cellars is a project led by Dennis Cakebread of Cakebread Cellars to produce first class wines from the unique microclimates of Washington State. Drawn by the high quality of wines coming out of the Walla Walla, Dennis and winemaker Aryn Morell worked with the famed Seven Hills Vineyard on the southern edge of the Walla Walla Valley appellation as well as vineyards in the soon-to-be-recognized Royal Slope appellation to craft this powerful yet elegant Bordeaux-style Red Blend 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. The wine was fermented in a mix of concrete tanks and stainless steel, and aged 17 months in 40% new French and American oak. It received 91 points from Vinous who said "Medium red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice, violet, smoky oak and a whiff of tomato sauce that quickly blew off. Very rich, thick and savory but shows lovely acidity for the vintage. Nicely savory, juicy and penetrating, finishing with plenty of dusty tannins to support aging." and it was just awarded the Chairman's Trophy in The Ultimate Wine Competition. They scored it "96 points and said "Although a blend, the wine shows plenty of Cabernet’s wild berry and black pepper character on its effusive nose. When tasted, more flavors of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and baked plum become apparent. Intense on its own and sublime with beef from the grill."

Drawn by the high quality of wines coming out of the Walla Walla, Dennis and winemaker Aryn Morell worked with the famed Seven Hills Vineyard on the southern edge of the Walla Walla Valley appellation as well as vineyards in the soon-to-be-recognized Royal Slope appellation to craft this powerful yet elegant Bordeaux-style Red Blend. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. The Wine Advocate scored it 89-91 saying "An impressive barrel sample, the 2012 Red Blend checks in as a mix of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc, that will all spend 16 months in 40% new French and American oak. Giving up plenty of creme de cassis, licorice, toast and raspberry-like qualities on the nose, this medium to full-bodied, juicy effort has a supple, soft mid-palate and building tannin that comes through on the finish. It has good potential and could possibly be outstanding if everything comes together once bottled. It should drink nicely for 5 to 8 years. Range: 89-91" And Antonio Galloni scored it 91+ saying "Bright dark red with ruby highlights. Aromas of currant, plum, licorice and spicy oak. At once supple and cool, showing a suave texture and noteworthy intensity and depth to the slightly medicinal plum, redcurrant, mineral and menthol flavors. Much more than just a fruit bomb. Finishes with serious but suave tannins and excellent rising length. This classy, firmly structured blend should age gracefully. This is the new Washington project of Napa Valley’s Dennis Cakebread, with Aryn Morell responsible for the winemaking. An early look at the 2013 confirms that this is an emerging star." Limited!
