Must have for Rioja lovers. Medium to full bodied with classic tempranillo notes of leather and coffee to balance the fruit and spice.

Exceptional - Wonderful aromas of raspberry, blackcurrant, leather and coffee, silky taste, excellent balance and long finish, in a broad-shouldered and imposing bottle. A little bit expensive!

This red marries elegance and concentration, with ripe plum and blackberry flavors, toasty, cola-scented oak notes and lovely spice accents. A bit tightly wound now, it should be gorgeous with a bit of age. Best from 1999 through 2010.

Plush and harmonious, this red is alluring yet subtle, with intense flavors backed by an impressive structure. Look for black currant, cocoa, cigar box and mineral notes now, and expect further complexity as this evolves. Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano. Drink now through 2020.

A new offering, and another of the super cuveacute;es to emerge from this regionhellip; The concept behind this wine is to produce a luxury cuveacute;e of Rioja based on a selection of the finest lots of wine. Aging for 22 months in large American oak vats was followed by 16 months in small new French oak casks. While the price may be high, it is not out of line with the quality of the wine. A blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, and 10% Graciano, the wine boasts a dark garnet color, and an intense, fragrant nose of spicy, toasty, new oak, smoke, black fruits, and minerals. Full-bodied, rich, and powerful, as well as elegant and harmonious, this wine is still youthful despite the fact it is six years old. Give it another 2ndash;3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 15ndash;18 years. It is an unevolved wine, yet quite impressive!

A dazzling effort from this traditionally run bodega, the 1994 Torre Muga is a terrific Rioja. A blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo and 10% Grenache, this wine emerges from the estatersquo;s oldest vines, and is aged in small barriques. A breakthrough in what will undoubtedly be a bevy of cult Riojas, made from old vines, and aged in small casks, this is a full-bodied, superbly-concentrated, fragrant, multi-dimensional wine. The color is a deep, dark ruby with some lightening at the edge. The nose offers up sweet scents of black cherry liqueur, raspberries, licorice, smoke, lead pencil, and pain grilleacute;. In the mouth, there are lush layers of fruit that cascade over the palate, as well as full body and gobs of glycerin. This Rioja possesses gorgeous sweetness of fruit (from extract, not sugar), as well as impeccable purity and overall harmony. Anticipated maturity: nowndash;2015. This wine spent 22 months in American oak vats, followed by 16 months in 100% new Allier oak casks!

This vintage of Torre Muga leads with its dazzling complexity, then wallops you with richness. Itandrsquo;s easy to get caught up in the whirl of spice rising from the glass, coriander, sandalwood, tobacco leaf, the milk chocolate hint of oak; itandrsquo;s an intellectual pleasure. Then from the first sip thereandrsquo;s the sensual pleasure, too, of packed cherry and raspberry fruit, of the dense silky texture, and of those gripping tannins that pull the finish into line. Delicious as it is now, this deserves a decade in the cellar, when it will provide a layered accompaniment to herb-rubbed leg of lamb.

The new luxury Rioja, the 1995 Torre Muga Reserva Especial (75% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, and 10% Graciano), was kept 22 months in large American oak vats and then moved to 100% new French oak for 16 months. There are approximately 5,000 cases of this gorgeous Rioja, which has managed to endure significant oak aging, yet retain remarkable levels of fruit, complexity, and richness. The Lafite-Rothschild of Rioja, it offers elegant, spicy, cedary, black cherry, mineral, and toasty aromas. Medium to full-bodied, with harmony among its component parts, this is a wine of exceptional grace, richness, length, and overall symmetry. It can be drunk now, but promises to improve for 12ndash;20 years. Impressive!

This seems eminently ageworthy; it has the strong foundation and pulsing acidity required of a true cellar dweller. The raspberry and plum fruit have a beam of acidity and the tannins are not shy. Shows all the hallmarks of a fine modern Rioja: power, purity and balance.
