We concluded that a comfordable life in the Adelaide metropolis was one thing but a challenging adventure in the most beautiful Clare Valley region of South Australia was preferable. Being world travelers, gourmands, bon vivants and bibbers we were seized with vinous inspiration whilst holidaying in the Clare Valley in 1994. Having already decided to change career directions our search for a suitable property took us up to the top of a 400 metre hillside. The property, now named Mt Surmon, consists of 84 acres of hillside with slopes to the east and stunning vistas to the Flinders Ranges to the north. Previous uses had been for grazing and grain growing. Three small stock dams, which were insufficient as a reliable water supply, and very old internal fence lines comprised the asset improvements. We purchased the property in October 1994. A small galvanized shed was erected which we moved into with our two red kelpies in August 1995 whilst the house was being built. During this time we planted the first 20 acres and went to college to learn the rudimentaries of vineyard establishment. A consultant drew up our first three year investment plan and tutored us during this time. Fifty acres of wine grapes have now been planted. Scalattis Cellar Door Gallery and The Retreat accomodation unit were opened in February 2001. Read less
