After spending twenty one vintages, a decade and a half of them as winemaker for caretaker Mr. Richard Gregory Trott's ironstone foundry and workshop known locally as ‘W2' (nee Wirra Wirra) Vineyards in McLaren Vale, and simultaneously as an air miles lifetime reward(less) Flying-Winemaker (Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Greece, Italy and the South of France) I knew it was time at the turn of the Trillennium to do my own thing… The rest was, in comparison, simple; McLaren Vale, her beloved Shiraz, my mate and mentor Mr. Tony Parkinson, his Penny's Hill Winery and our mates Messrs. Beal (Snr. and Jnr.). Added to this combination the original Mr. Riggs' Vineyard, and help from friends, the only thing left to decide was what to call the kit… I always hoped that someday I would make wine for myself, under my own shingle so to speak. Mate and muse Mr. Parkinson convinced me to moniker my first 15 barriques as ‘Mr. Riggs', a title I would prefer to not outgrow. I reckon people started calling me Mr. Riggs when I outgrew my dad (the previous Mr. Riggs). Since then, altitude has not been an issue; I'd been making Shiraz at sea level, McLaren Vale South Australia , for more than fifteen years. Motivated by the ‘Monapilla' vineyard of vigneron Mr. Beal (Snr.) and viticulturist Mr. Beal (Jnr.) this wine is the first manifestation of Mr. Riggs's beloved McLaren Vale Shiraz, and in 2001 was the start of things to come… Read less

You know the type. Big and thick and loads of jam. Solid and fun and not for the faint of fruit.

My wife and I absolutely love this wine. Really one of the nicest wines I have ever tried... it just fits my taste so well. I had the opportunity to try this wine only to find that it is not available in Alberta. It is my current "Holy Grail", so if anyone knows where I may acquire this wine I will purchase a couple cases. Anyway, on to the review... Upfront full bodied jammy berry flavour with a lingering finish that keeps you asking for more. Very well balanced and "spiced" to perfection.

Glass-staining purple. Blackberry, licorice and smoky Indian spices on the nose. Juicy and lithe, with vibrant flavors of black fruits and cracked pepper. This energetic, tightly wound shiraz finishes with very good clarity and spicy persistence. This was aged in one-third new French oak but I dont sense it. Aged for 12 months in French oak, 30% new, the 2010 The Gaffer Shiraz has a very deep garnet-purple color and pronounced black fruits, black currant and mocha nose with hints of bacon, cinnamon stick and loam. Full bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, it is well balanced by crisp acid and a medium level of velvety tannins, finishing long and savory. Drink it now to 2017.

Bright ruby. The nose offers energetic lift to the aromas of raspberry and cherry preserves, rose, Asian spices and red licorice. Juicy, broad and spicy, with gentle acidity giving a light touch to the fairly intense red fruit flavors. Quite expressive now but this wine really needs a couple years to harmonize. Finishes with dusty, fine-grained tannins and good clarity. The 2008 Shiraz The Gaffer which spent 12 months in a mix of new and used French oak. Dark ruby in color, this is a straightforward, fruity, easy to understand style of Shiraz with plenty of succulent blue and black fruit and good balance. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. A light layer of tannins adds structure to this open-textured mouthful of plum and berry flavors, finishing on a savory note. Drink now through 2013. 3,000 cases made. -HS ** SOLD OUT **

The 2006 Shiraz andldquo; The Gafferandrdquo; (meaning andldquo;the Bossandrdquo;) was aged for 12 months in a mix of new and used French oak. Purple-colored, it exhibits a slightly muted nose of damp earth, cinnamon, pepper, and blue fruits. Supple-textured and full-bodied, the wine has gobs of ripe fruit, layered flavors and excellent balance in its forward personality. Drink it over the next 6andndash;8 years.

Deep ruby. Pungent blackberry aroma is complicated by fresh violet, tobacco and smoky minerals; this smells like an Old World syrah. Zesty dark berry flavors are brightened by graphite and cracked pepper, picking up an exotic floral pastille quality on the back end. The smoke and graphite qualities recur on the finish, which features very good lift and focus.
