Mouth-Filling Opulent Style With Lashings of Black Fruits and Spices. Margaret River Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon Reds 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Regarded as a true icon in Australia, Leeuwin Estate, although known more for their heroic Chardonnay make one of the finest Cabernets too. From one of Australia's top wine writers, Huon Hooke, comes the following note - "Great red wines take time. The best need years to show their worth, they cellar long-term and build and evolve as they mature. This is not a fruity cab for instant gratification. It's built for the long haul. Released at more than five years old, it's youthful and reserved. It needs to be coaxed by swirling, sniffing and exercising patience; the palate is powerful and structured. It's rich fleshy, concentrated and profound, with a big finish and tremendous length. Drink for 25 years." 95/100

At the time a cattle farm, Leeuwin Estate evolved under the direction of owners Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Mondavi acting as consultant and mentor. The Estate was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter magazine awarded their highest recommendation to the 1980 Art Series Chardonnay. Now under the direction of two generations of the founding family, the Estate is recognized as one of Australia’s leading wine producers and wine tourism pioneers. Featured three times in the prestigious category of “International Winery of the Year” by U.S. Wine & Spirits magazine, Leeuwin Estate wines nconsistently rank alongside the world’s finest. This wine is possibly one of the best wines that I have ever enjoyed. From two minutes after opening this, it was amazing! Caught vanilla right off the bat with a "little" hint of oak, but becuase this wine is so well made, it works just fine. I also got a smokey taste, almost like liquid smoke. This was very smooth and creamy and I loved it.
