Mountford Estate Riesling Riche 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The colour is pale gold with primary aromas of citrus, minerals and white peaches. Best served very well chilled. The 2009 Mountford Riesling can be described as Riche Riesling with its 60 grams of RS and a pH of 3.08. The sulphur dioxide is still noticeable in this newly bottled wine but with time it will integrate. On the palate, the wine is rich and fruity but the acidity and mineral components keep this richness in check. This Riesling will age well and develop more rocky and stony flavours with a few years of age. For those who like to drink aromatics young, this Mountford 2009 Riesling will be very satisfying.

Early pioneers of the wine industry in the South West of Western Australia, the Mountford family selected Pemberton with its high winter rainfall for the unique flavour potential possible from this cooler and largely forested region. Trained horticulturist Andrew Mountford was looking for a region as yet undiscovered in Australia and chose the site of the vineyard based upon the combination of soil, climate, topography and of course most importantly the right feel. Eighty acres of undulating country gave all the variables needed for this dream and a fifteen acre vineyard was planted. Obvious cool climate conditions, amongst the coolest in Western Australia were suitable for Andrew and Sue Mountford's passion for the classic early ripening varieties; Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. In this regions short history these varieties have proven more than any other to be the correct selection. Established in 1987 and now one of the regions oldest vineyards, these vines are producing fruit with true intensity and complexity. This is due to careful organic vineyard practice since inception and continual sound environmental care. These practices have enabled expression from vineyard to bottle ensuring all the wines retain their essence of place. Read less
