Mount Veeder Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Meritage 2005

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Soft on the nose with spicy oak accenting floral and dried fruit aromas. Very light on entry and then it gains weight but not intensity of flavor. A rather big, structured wine with drying tannins that’s missing a bit of a mid-palate and is drying and tough on the finish, which shows some heat. This is oaky and earthy and tough. It’s not bad wine and would benefit from being paired with a nice steak, and may even improve in the cellar, but for now it’s really a wine for tannin hounds. 84pts

“Mount Veeder is a magical place—a rare and beautiful spot where vines cling to the steep hillsides, producing tiny, concentrated berries that give our wines their big, bold, brambly fruit character.” Both Mount Veeder Winery and the rugged appellation take their names from an ancient volcano—a nearly 2,700 foot peak that crowns the southeast section of the Mayacamas Range, running between Napa and Sonoma. The Mount Veeder appellation encompasses 25 square miles of some of the steepest vineyards in California. Winemaking in the region dates back to the 1860s and by the late 1800s, the mountain hosted at least 20 vineyards and six wineries. Pioneers who cultivated vineyards on Mount Veeder knew there was something special about wines from these steep slopes. Winemakers across the Napa Valley began to recognize that grapes from Mount Veeder and other mountain appellations had an intensity and depth unlike grapes from the valley floor. Powerful and distinct, mountain grapes challenged the winemaker to tame their rugged tannins and reveal a deeper character. Mountain grapes soon became the backbone of many of Napa Valley’s best wines because of their structure and concentrated flavors. Today, mountain wines are in a class by themselves. In flavor and texture, the profile of a mountain wine is different. It is more difficult to produce; rare and limited in supply, but undeniably captivating, charismatic and long-lived. Read less

Earthy on the nose, this wine was dry and tannic on the palate, followed by some more tannins on the finish. It opened in the glass to some more flavorful mushroom and earthiness, so I would definitely suggest decanting. The second bottle will sit in the cellar for a time which will hopefully round it out. A friend who we drank it with was very insistent that this was not a typical Mt. Veeder Winery product, which she normally raves over.

Great wine, took 25mins to open up and could use a little more time to age.
