“Mount Veeder is a magical place—a rare and beautiful spot where vines cling to the steep hillsides, producing tiny, concentrated berries that give our wines their big, bold, brambly fruit character.” Both Mount Veeder Winery and the rugged appellation take their names from an ancient volcano—a nearly 2,700 foot peak that crowns the southeast section of the Mayacamas Range, running between Napa and Sonoma. The Mount Veeder appellation encompasses 25 square miles of some of the steepest vineyards in California. Winemaking in the region dates back to the 1860s and by the late 1800s, the mountain hosted at least 20 vineyards and six wineries. Pioneers who cultivated vineyards on Mount Veeder knew there was something special about wines from these steep slopes. Winemakers across the Napa Valley began to recognize that grapes from Mount Veeder and other mountain appellations had an intensity and depth unlike grapes from the valley floor. Powerful and distinct, mountain grapes challenged the winemaker to tame their rugged tannins and reveal a deeper character. Mountain grapes soon became the backbone of many of Napa Valley’s best wines because of their structure and concentrated flavors. Today, mountain wines are in a class by themselves. In flavor and texture, the profile of a mountain wine is different. It is more difficult to produce; rare and limited in supply, but undeniably captivating, charismatic and long-lived. Read less

Opaque and showing a little age. This is smoky and grilled beefy on the nose with a nice combination of sweet black plum and blackcurrant fruit, smoky herbs, soil tones and vanilla oak. A little tight still in the mouth with tannins that are softly austere supporting a rich, savory core of fruit. There's still a lot of mineral earth and some wood toast here but the fruit, wild blueberry and currant toned with a little bitter chocolate streak to it is emerging on the midplate along with a hint of truffle that persists through the long finish. Still a bit tough and edgy this is a fine rendition of mountain cabernet with length and a touch of throw back rusticity. 91pts

Lots of blue in the color makes it a nice purple. Nose is somewhat minty, and I’m getting a hint of licorice. On the tongue, there is a pleasant cassis flavor that is not overwhelming. Very firm tannin remove fruitiness. There is some sort of “olive” flavor way in the back of the palate, but it diminishes quickly. It does not seem to appear in subsequent tastes.

The wine is like many good Napa cabs, very deep ruby color, almost inky in the glass. The nose is a wonderfully rich blend of leather, blackberry, cherry and anise that speaks to the richness of the wine, and feel free to let it open up a bit in the glass, my hint is to have a glass or two while I am making dinner, so it's perfect by the time I sit down to eat. The taste is a lovely fruit forward blend of ripe berries, plum and fresh herbs, giving way to some spicy notes midpalate, as the flavors play against each other and add a bit of complexity. The nicely structured tannins provide for a long, dry, velvety finish that makes this wine a treat by itself. Concentrated aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, anise, and bay, highlighted with notes of coffee and currants. Very full-bodied, plushy and dense. Rich and round mouthfeel with intense flavors of cassis and black cherry. Good structure and well-balance
