A little pepper, spice and currants on the nose, a lot of earthy aromas. The palate offers a tannic punch with layers of dark fruit/berries combined with dark chocolate, full in body and needs some time. This was my 4th wine tasted at the Franciscan winery and was paired with a Vella Dry Jack Cheese, a very powerful cheese.

Deep garnet in color, light staining on the tears. Nose of dark cherry, blackberry, black currents & tobacco with a hint of smokey wood. Palate flavors of blackberry, dark cherry, chocolate. Good structure and well-balanced, with fine tannins and a medium plus finish with notes of smoke and vanilla.

Nose of canned cherries, currants. Thick and rich flavor with heavy tannins. Enjoyable now, but will get better with age.

While many of the '98 Cabernet lack the drive for a better vintage, this one goes for a mellow tone, a light claret style cleanly expressed. It's filled with red cherry flavors that deepen to plum as it takes on air, bringing on accents of black olive and the plump, round sweetness of oak. A solid '98, with a lift in the finish to what the appetite of Provençal lamb.

Mount Veeder's wines have taken a lovely turn since 1990, the recent releases in a style that promotes ripeness while maintaining a sense of their vineyard origin. the '95 is a case in point: It's well-crafted and balanced Cabernet, medium-bodied with elegant black stone fruit and fine herbal flavors of the soil. Even with its rich, supple fruit, the Mount Veeder does have strong, mountain-grown tannins, so mellow them for three or more years in the cellar.

Tight and tannic, full-bodied and intense, with firm, dry currant, berry, mineral and fresh earth. Austere and balanced, but ending with gripping tannins. Best from 2010 through 2016.

When I worked as the sommelier for Roy's in Dallas (part of Outback Corporation), my favorite guests were executives from Citibank. They would order Mt. Veeder Cab by the boatload because of its full body, juniper, blackberry, dark cherry aroma and consistent, full mouthfeel of rich fruit with a distinct crescendo of tannins on the palate. The wine was usually enjoyed with their ritual Szechuan spiced pork rib appetizers, herbed goat cheese salad and filet mignon, finishing with a chocolate soufflé. The wine accompanied every course and continued to evolve as the night went on! Try Mt. Veeder today and create your own experience!

Combines a complex mix of firm yet ripe and supple currant, spice, mint and cedary oak flavors with touches of mineral, sage and tobacco, ending with good length, but also tannic muscle. Best from 2011 through 2017.

Complex and intense without being overpowering, this wine has plenty assortment of toasty oak, elegant plum and black cherry, and supple, harmonious tannins that linger long. Drinkable now, worthy of cellaring, too. Best from 2000 through 2007.
