“Mount Veeder is a magical place—a rare and beautiful spot where vines cling to the steep hillsides, producing tiny, concentrated berries that give our wines their big, bold, brambly fruit character.” Both Mount Veeder Winery and the rugged appellation take their names from an ancient volcano—a nearly 2,700 foot peak that crowns the southeast section of the Mayacamas Range, running between Napa and Sonoma. The Mount Veeder appellation encompasses 25 square miles of some of the steepest vineyards in California. Winemaking in the region dates back to the 1860s and by the late 1800s, the mountain hosted at least 20 vineyards and six wineries. Pioneers who cultivated vineyards on Mount Veeder knew there was something special about wines from these steep slopes. Winemakers across the Napa Valley began to recognize that grapes from Mount Veeder and other mountain appellations had an intensity and depth unlike grapes from the valley floor. Powerful and distinct, mountain grapes challenged the winemaker to tame their rugged tannins and reveal a deeper character. Mountain grapes soon became the backbone of many of Napa Valley’s best wines because of their structure and concentrated flavors. Today, mountain wines are in a class by themselves. In flavor and texture, the profile of a mountain wine is different. It is more difficult to produce; rare and limited in supply, but undeniably captivating, charismatic and long-lived. Read less

Great nose on this wine and it was great on the palate as well. Rich, full, well structured cab. - Tasted at Hostile Grape 10/8/09

A really great "old school' cab. Tannic and silky, with lots of oak and black cherries and subtle currants.

Delish, leather, tobacco, complex - it's not 2004, but it's great

The nose was almost all alcohol except for some nice over-baked berries-on the palate nice chewy fruit and tannin structure-it was balanced however somewhat hot and one dimensional...previous vintages were much more impressive-somewhat disappointed

Oaky, a bit of leather. Kind of strong, a bit warm and simple. Very enjoyable

Winemaker Notes - Deep ruby in appearance with rich aromas of mountain fruit, brambly berry, coffee, bay, and cassis fill the nose. Hints of licorice, vanilla and cocoa add to the complexity. The flavor is powerful and dense, with a big, supple mouthfeel carrying deep layers of blackberry, sage, plum and chocolate. Rich and well-structured, with mouth-filling tannins and toasty notes of sweet oak. The full-bodied palate leads to a long complex finish of blackberry, anise, and cocoa. Featuring an Etched Front Label.
